Do we have to buy all new bedding?

For Baby No. 2? Baby No. 2 will be a full sibling to DD. I have loads of sheets still left over. We'll be getting a new mattress, b/c the cot will be different, but the old sheets still fit it fine.

We're on a REALLY tight budget, so I'm wondering if I can still use the same sheets for the new baby - I read somewhere that using sheets from someone other than a full sibling can increase the risk of cot death, but wanted to be sure this was true before the baby's Xmas gift has to be sheets b/c we literally have no money to buy all new stuff.

i use the sheets that ds1 had, wasn't aware that u couldn't. after all its not like i don't wash them!

BTW, I've never heard that using sheets from someone else increases the risk of cot death. Maybe matresses but not bedding that's washed frequently.

I've never heard about not being able to use sheets from another baby. I thought that the SID foundation had stopped advising new mattresses now as there is no proven link?

I'm using the same mattress from the moses basket as DD was in it all of 5 minutes. This baby is getting a new cot so new sheets but will be using DDs blankets.

If he/shes anything like DD they will be in our bed (shock horror) so will be using the same sheets!

Same as Hausfrau. After reading SIDS foundation stuff, decided to use same mattress as DD1 - was stored well so dry and totally mould free. had one of those breathable membrane type covers so washed and dried it. Used all old bedding, just washed it again prior to use to get rid of any possible dust etc and was totally fine and healthy.
I am not saying that what you have heard is wrong - just that I have never ever heard it and if it were the case would have expected the mw and hvs to be spouting it at you loud and clear.

Gosh no you don't have to buy new! Or a new mattress or anything. There is no connection between sheets and cot death.

Just in case you need further convincing - I used same everything for DD2.

The only connection I have heard re mattresses is if you reuse them between families. We bought a cheap new one for the carry cot, but reused the cot mattress. Sheets are definitely ok!

What kind of mattress should I use?
It doesn?t matter whether the mattress is new, as long as it?s firm, not soft, doesn?t sag and shows no sign of deterioration. Keep it well aired, clean and dry. Use a mattress completely covered with PVC or another wipe-clean surface. Ventilated mattresses (with holes) are not necessary. Place your baby with their feet to the foot of the cot. Never sleep your baby on a pillow, cushion, bean bag or water bed. Never sleep together with your baby on a sofa or settee.

I'm not buying any more sheets for DS2/DD.

I have never heard this before, I used the same bedding for all 3 of mine (and would do for number 4 if I had kept it!). Personally I even think the new mattress thing is also OTT and pushed by bloody mothercare! Generations of families have used the same mattress with no ill effects - as long as you are sensible about its condition. Same goes for car seats, if you know it hasn't been in an accident then it should be ok - obviously taking notice of wear n tear etc. It's more important to fit it properly. I bet some people's car seats are worth more than their cars! Trust your own common sense, you don't need a bath thermometer, a room thermometer or a baby listener unless you live in a mansion! People lived without these things for years. It's more important not to smoke or let the baby fall asleep in a squashed position.,
