Nursery furniture

Hi everyone,

I am looking at nursery furniture and wondering if anyone has any recommendations on where to buy? I won't need a wardrobe as the nursery has a built in wardrobe, so I am looking for a cot and changing table/chest of drawers that can be used as a changing table.
All the sets I can find are with a cotbed rather than a cot. Mostly they have a wardrobe aswell or with 7 pieces (eg toybox, shelf, chair, footstool etc!!)

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks

a great site for inspiration for nurseries is Ohdeedoh - check out the top tours which show readers' nurseries. They are so beautiful and creative and help you to think outside of the box for a relly unique room/space....

Also have a look at
www.coochicoos.com/nursery-galleryfor inspiration.

I personally favour the mismatched look...

We've gone for a Stokke Sleepi bed in white, a white Expedit storage system from Ikea turned horizontally (not normally a big fan of ikea but this a great piece for storing/showing off baby paraphernalia), a chandelier from the Little White Company and artwork from the Keep Calm Gallery.

Don't think will be bother with either a changing station or dedicated baby furniture. Will use a standard changing mat either on the floor or bed and have bought a large wardrobe that will be shared by DH and DD.

Very excited to start putting it all together now but fear it may be too early at only 30 weeks!

Hello anyone looking for a mattress try www.babymattressesonline.co.uk i used them instead of mothercare or john lewis for a new boori cotbed mattress and they were brilliant price and service.

Great links tanmu and Duke, thanks!

When I was buying nursery furniture, I got Mamas & Papa's stuff from www.pramcentreonline.co.uk - they are (or were) much cheaper than the Mamas & Papas stores.
This was 6 years ago though, so I don't know how the prices compare now.

diggingintheribs · 22/07/2010 17:42

we bought our cotbed in mothercare

we bought the changing drawers from mamas and papas which was a mistake. I watched them put it together and was really disappointed with the quality given the price. Also had a problem as we originally ordered the matching cotbed with drawer underneath (that fitted perfectly) only to be called a few days later to be told the bed didn't come with a drawer. looked on the website where there was a photo proving the drawer existed but the lady on the other end kept denying it! Really annoyed me and have never bought from them since!

Heard Ikea stuff is good value

HappyMum08 · 17/08/2010 16:18

I bought mine from babybabyonline.co.uk, they have some good quality units there. I won't say it's cheap, but the quality is really good, so worth the money :)

www.mamasandpapas.com/range/murano/2708/

Have recently bought this for DS's room - the chest of drawers and wardrobe as he's starting school in Sept and wanted more storage space. Have to say, it looks lovely. You can do the chest of drawers without the changing rail but you do see the the screws at the side, but its not an issue for us

The wardrobe is not as sturdy as a solid wood one would be, but its not been a problem and it fits adult sized hangers which is great as you don't want to buy a wardrobe that only fits toddler sized hangers, they grow so fast you want something that grows with them

gwenner · 17/08/2010 16:42

Mamas and Papas have a factory outlet in Huddersfield, well worth a visit as you can get some great standalone pieces for knock down prices.

Ebay was also my friend for M&P changing tables at bargain prices...........

I bought standard furniture other than cotbeds for my 2 - no need to rid furniture when they get older!

AnnaAug · 17/08/2010 16:46

We've been lucky enough to go for M&P cotbed and chest of draws/changing table (money was a gift from my grandparents, bless them!) - it's gorgeous and heavy solid wood. Hopefully a good investment for future babies!

One thing we were keen to get was a chest of draws that could double as a changing table ? we thought it would be more practical for long term use. Also a midwife friend warned of tendency for little ones to pull themselves up holding onto nursery furniture - and with lightweight changing tables there's the risk of them pulling the whole thing over (screwing it to the wall would obv avoid that though, so not exactly a problem!)

ReshapeWhileDamp · 17/08/2010 19:07

The only 'nursery' item we bought (apart from a cotbed) was an IKEA chest of drawers with a flip-over changing table, and it wasn't available from IKEA at the time we needed it, so I got it on ebay. It's similar to this one but better! Ours has three drawers and the table flips over and doubles in size.

Aha! This is it on ebay. Really worth getting one - it looks nice and not too infantile, and it'll work as a chest of drawers for DS for years.

NoTeaForMe · 17/08/2010 19:17

Hi all!

This thread seems to have re-appeared! We have bought an east coast antique pine cotbed recently, far too early but used the tesco double your points offer and got the cotbed and mattress for free! Couldn't say no to that!!!

When I said nursery furniture I kind if just meant furniture for the nursery rather than specific nursery style furniture if that makes sense! Our aim all along was to get a chest of drawers that can fit a changing mat on the top and then be used wherever for as long as poss as a chest of drawers.

We still haven't bought that yet, but we are hoping to move house before the baby is born so are now wondering whether to get it now and delivered here or wait til we move!! Now we have the cotbed we know what we are matching it to aswell I guess!

Thanks for all your posts!

Has anyone seen Babystyle furniture? It looks good (Calgary range) but apparently you cannot check it out on a shopfloor..

vmcd28 · 25/10/2010 18:43

Why are you writing off the idea of getting a cot bed?
With DS1, we bought a normal cot with a drop side, as we thought it made more sense. However, we dropped the side about 10 times in total, so that was a wasted feature! It just wasnt necessary.

Also, my DS ended up moving into a racing car bed (which happened to be a cotbed-sized mattress), and he was in that till he was 5. So this time we've got a cotbed and intend on using it till the next one is around 5. That will save us a lot of cash!

This thread is four years old.

Mummymidwife87 · 16/06/2014 12:00

We didn't get nursery furniture as such.

I had a large chest of drawers from ikea in white with 4 large drawers and 2 small, bought a tall single white wardrobe from ikea and put in two rails.. Lots of room for storage inside. Have a single bed in the room which pulls out to a double for visitors or myself when baby is up all night and I need to lie down. Have a petite cot in there which will take place of a Moses as well.. Lasts for up to 9-12months and quite light so easy to move from room to room. Bought a cot top changing mat to protect my back from bending over too frequently. Not bothering with changing table... Have bought a cleaning caddy and filled with changing essentials

I got the pebble cot from Mamas and Papas. It's small enough for our little room but very sturdy. Customer service hasn't been great so far though... To go with it we got a white chest of drawers from ikea (the malm range) which is big and should last through lots of rooms and not just a nursery; a chair from Ikea (the poang non-rocker) which again I'm hoping will have a life beyond a nursery and finally we splashed out on a more expensive book case and storage unit from the great little trading company. That was a lot of money but perfect for what we wanted and given the rest was cheap I'm kind of justifying it! We're getting a cot top changer from mamas and papas too.

icklekid · 16/06/2014 17:19

We got cotbed and chest of drawers with changing top from mothercare, is there not room for a cot bed hence wanting a cot?

MrsMonkeyBear · 16/06/2014 17:22

Haven't bothered with proper nursery furniture. Too expensive for what it is and I've figured it will be cheaper in the long run just to get things that can last.

I got a massive (long) chest of drawers for £20 from gumtree. My rocking chair has been in the family for years (I think I was fed in it at some point) cotbed/crib/Moses basket are all second hand and I have bought replacement mattresses for all. I got a unit from IKEA with storage boxes for nappies etc and my dad has built a wardrobe for us as I wanted one that bump could reach to get her own clothes as she gets older.

AndreVictoire · 02/12/2014 18:59

IMHO most nursery furniture is over priced (there are extra safety features, non lead paint, the fact childrens and nursery has to jump through extra EU standards before it can be sold, so heads don't get caught, strangled etc) but they really play on the "nothing is too much for my first born" syndrome.

All I would say from what I have seen, avoid MDF, usually if it is white. MDF is used becuase it can be moulded consistently and painted to a nice smooth finish. However it is always really heavy, which means it gets dropped and does have the strength to cope - ergo you get damaged furniture quite easily, especially during delivery. Solid furniture and particle board does not have this problem in the same way.

We used Online4baby website - some good offers, single pieces and we found the service really good.
