Are they worth it? and when is the best time to do them?

Also I am having twins, has anyone else had experience of a 4d scan for twins?

Thanks

foureyes - I agree with you! I didnt say I understood or agreed with the explanation of what 4D means, but that is officially what it means.

I had my 4D scan on saturday, with a company called A4DBaby. They're relatively cheap as they use hotel facilities rather than having their own property.

I thought it was a wonderful way to bond with my babies, it has made it all much more 'real' somehow. The pictures were amazing - you can see smiles and frowns and in my case, my baby girl giving her brother a kiss on the bum (after he spent most of the scan sitting on her head!) All very 'real' looking and amazing to see their facial expressions and how much they've developed.

I was impressed with the company too. I had reservations about them if I'm honest, as it sounds like a strange setup to be taking mobile equipment into hotels! It was all very organised though, and the sonographer was an NHS sonographer who had scanned me for a routine scan a few weeks ago, so definately using qualified sonographers!

All in all, I'd say our 30 min session with A4DBaby (with a DVD of the whole 30 mins, a CD of 45 still pictures and a couple of printed pictures on thermal paper) was well worth the £145 they charged. I will enjoy watchng the DVD over the next three months, and I think it'll be nice to share it with my twins when they're older (but not til they're old enough to deal with the fact that he has his bum in her face for most of the scan !)

Hope this helps your decision

Hi, I had a 4d scan at the birth company in Harley Street on Saturday. It was quite expensive but absolutely worth every penny. I would highly recommend it. The sonographer was thorough and careful. She did a routine scan first checking that the baby was developing well and taking measurements. She was clearly really knowledgable and took time to explain to us what she could see and what she was looking for. We have her estimated weight now (2lbs 5oz at 27+3) and an indication of her term weight based on this (thankfully a mere 7lbs 7oz!).

She 'switched over' to 4d having seen that the baby was well and thriving. The quality of the scan was increadible. We have a really good idea of what our baby looks like (cute obviously). We could see all of her features, ears, eyes, nose, mouth, hands and feet clearly with definiation that was surprising. It was amazing to see her sucking her thumb - and just 'being' inside me. Many of her movements I couldn't feel either which was actually reassuring. I could have watched all day...

The whole scan was recorded from the beginning so we have the regular scan parts as well as the 4d parts to look at.

We left almost numb by what we had seen. It was a fabulous experience.

Wow, I must be lucky (or maybe its just payback for all the stress I had earlier!!). After a high nuchal reading I was referred to St George's in Tooting for scans, at my 23 week anomaly scan they spent about 45mins scanning and measuring everything and as part of this process regularly turned on the 4D - it was pretty cool, she did a thumbs up at one point and was sucking her thumb. I came away with 5 4D photos. It was great but I'm not sure I'd pay £250 for it - essentially all I wanted to know was that she was ok, which she is! the 4D scans were a bonus but I'd rather not have had the stress of waiting for scans and having a CVS etc in the first place.
