Maternity Clothes

I'm now at the stage where none of my trousers will fit me anymore, but why can't I find a decent pair of maternity trousers at an affordable price? Why do they think it's ok to charge £25 + for something that in my case, I will never wear again? And why are they all in appauling taste? I don't wear jogging bottoms, or combats, or flares, or Andy Pandy type striped ones - do they think that my mind has shrunk so much that I am prepared to go out and about looking like a sack of potatoes??? And pay over £25 for the priviledge???

All I want is a pair of plain, straight-legged trousers for an affordable price. Where can I get them from?

Rhubarb - you sussed my name! Dotty Perks has the nicest straight leg trousers for mums - you may just have to wait a few more weeks for the autumn stock. I know what you mean about the panels thouugh - a bit hideous and like you say, they mean you are condemned to always wearing long tops. Well, I suppose you don't have to but you'd get some weird looks in the supermarket.

If you don't mind second hand have you tried the 'buy and sell' forums on UK Parents? they have a maternity wear section amongst others.

aloha · 24/07/2003 12:22

Rhubarb - I've just emailed you via Mumsnet. They are really very nice simple black trousers and will easily fit you to the end, I think. I'll post them to you when I get your email.

I'm a bit confused. Is Hennes the same as H&M? Because if so Rhubarb I went on their website and found a store in the St Georges Centre in Preston so it might be worth a try.

bunnyrabbit · 24/07/2003 13:02

Yes they are the same. But it's worth checking if they have a meternity section before you go up there. The one near me doesn't.

ThomCat · 24/07/2003 13:12

Hennes for all my maternity wear. We also had a maternity clothes pool! I have so many friends with kids that we all just lend each other our meternity wardrobes when the next one gets pregnant! i had some great maternity jeans from henes and some really nice t-shirts / vests etc and a great white shirt for work.

zebra · 24/07/2003 13:21

Doesn't the NCT still hire out maternity wear? That's where I got most of mine, anyway. Very cheap!

Rhubarb · 24/07/2003 17:06

Oh, Hennes is H&M's is it? Oh well we do have one! And they did have a sale on in their maternity clothes but, yes you've guessed it, the sizes were all either extra small or extra large!

Aloha, I haven't got your email yet, will reply to it when I do!

I found some cheap and cheerful stuff that fitted very well at George at Asda, suprisingly. Two pairs of mothercare trousers I bought were a disaster - fine at first but just didn't fit comfortably as my bump got bigger.

codswallop · 24/07/2003 17:12

log on to next/sale

aloha · 24/07/2003 20:53

Rhubarb, I'm sending you a pair of black trousers and a pair of jeans - neither too trendy Both v comfy and on the large side. So you can stop shopping.

Rhubarb · 25/07/2003 12:29

Thank you Aloha, don't get me blubbing again!

I've just had my baby but also had troubles finding maternity clothes at a reasonable price - who wants to waste good money on new clothes that are only worn for a limited time?! I had the same troubles when pregnant with my first child which led me to the idea of starting up a second hand maternity clothes business which for some reason never took off! Whether it was poor advertising or people wanting to buy new i have no idea all i know is i would have been really appreciative of that sort of service when i was expecting. I think if you're still working that makes it even harder as you don't want to keep wearing the same thing all the time.
I eventually got quite alot of stuff from a Next sale and also from H&M - i did find alot of the Next stuff quite big almost like they expected you to be growing a bump out of your bottom too!

baukjen · 05/11/2003 20:27

we launched a new maternity wear company www.isabellaoliver.com a few weeks ago which i set up with my friend when we were both expecting our first babies (her daughter: isabella, my son: oliver). i just celebrated oliver's first birthday 2 weeks ago and then found out that i'm pregnant again!

lucy123 · 05/11/2003 20:46

Nice clothes, baukjen (I was hoping to win last week's competition). Unfortunately out of my price range.

Did think the photos could have been bigger/clearer though!

baukjen · 05/11/2003 23:07

hi lucy,
thanks. agree with your comment. we're working on having bigger pictures.

CountessDracula · 05/11/2003 23:45

Nice pictures though. Agree a bit spenny but then it's nice to have one or two nice pieces to mix and match with the sh*te!

dot1 · 06/11/2003 08:35

does anyone know where I can get big girls' maternity clothes??! Normally a size 18, so starting to struggle already (and I'm only 20 weeks pregnant...). Don't mind paying a bit more so I can carry on wearing clothes for the last couple of months!

dot1 · 06/11/2003 08:39

ooh - I've just seen that the Argos stuff goes up to a 20 - hurrah!!

magnum · 06/11/2003 08:42

Asda do a good range at a very affordable price!! Might be worth a look.
