Haematoma spotted at scan

I had a scan yesterday, am 7 weeks, and the sonographer spotted a little clot just off to the side of the baby and yolk sac. I was there for a reassusrance scan and was so relieved to see the baby and a heartbeat that I kind of glossed over this info until later last night.

I wasn't given any info about what this means or advice to do things differently. The sonographer said she was only telling me in case I had some bleeding as this would likely be the cause.

Have googled and got some info which is pretty conflicting. Just wondering if anyone has any experience of this and advice for what this means? Have booking appointment with MW next week and will ask then but will undoubtedly drive myself nuts thinking about it in the meantime!

I had bleeding in my last pregnancy. I had a scan and I also had a haematoma in my womb. It was a clot stuck to the wall of my womb. You could see that it was dispersing and this was the bleeding I was experiencing.

The bleeding went on for a while. When I had a scan a few weeks later the clot had disappeared.

I would discuss it with your midwife for re-assurance. Hope all goes well x

Is that the same as a placental lake? I had a couple of those and remember being worried, but as far as I can tell, they don't cause any problems unless they are very large in which case the "useful" part of the placenta is reduced.

I had had a DVT previously so as soon as the sonographer said "you have a couple of clots on your placenta" I went into a flat spin!

Thanks both, it looked pretty small but was quite distinct. DH said he thought we were having twins at first!

I'll certainly ask my MW but was really wondering because some advice says you don't need to do anything different - and other advice mentions refraining from exercise, lifting things, sex, etc. Hopefully it will disperse - thanks for the advice in the meantime

Hi, i also have one too, im 10 weeks got told last week i had a small one too, so i worried at got myself in a state.

I know its scarey i was on here asking the same question, i want to book another scan so i can ask more questions etc see if it has gone or got smaller, but dh said to wait till 12 week scan

do you have any idea what size it is? I had one with a previous pg. I was ASSURED that it was NOT related to the MC I went on to have. AFAIK, they only affect the outcome of the pg if they are LARGE, and almost suffocate the fetus.
And yes, if you get any spotting or whatever, it is LIKELY from that, but always call the EPU just in case, so you can go for another scan just to be on the safe side.

The hematoma will usually resolve itself, and I am fairly certain that she'd have told you if she thought it was something to be concerned about.

Dont worry about this I had one too, had a bleed at 10 weeks and dashed to have a private scan on a saturday morning. The sonographer said it was small and she had seen much bigger ones that never caused problems. Mine bled for 2 weeks then stopped. A scan showed it had dispersed. I wasn't told to do anything differently although i was careful not to lift/strain. I was also told if i pass any clots to go back in to EPU. I passed one clot the size of a 5p on the last day of the bleed. Didnt go in because we were on holiday and also i just knew it was the actual clot i had passed so i was able to relax a bit.

Good luck and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy! Im sure your clot will disperse and all will be well

Forgot to say all was well after the clot dispersed, and my little DD is now 7 months old

Dont google it, i did and all i could find was bad news, doom and gloom! My midwife said it was rubbish and that these clots are so common!

Thanks everyone for your replies. It looks small, smaller than the area where the bean and yolk sac are. I had a MMC in December so am tending towards neurotic this time round so its good to hear some reassurance and a happy ending for neverneough! Will chat to the MW next week

That sounds nice and small to me. Let us know how you get on x

Hi moofold i saw my MW today and asked her about it as i was a little worried and her exact words were "oh gosh no dont worry, its small on the big ones are to be worried about, even then they only hold a 1% risk of MC being large" so i thought i would share that with you to hopefully put your mind zat rest too.
