Birth positions with SPD

Hi

I am 37 weeks and think I have got a bit of SPD. My hips have been quite painful if I sit in the same position to long, walk a lot and when in bed. They have now started clicking when I roll over.

I have heard there are positions that are not recomended when giving birth. Does anyone know which are best and which are to be avoided?

Thanks

I was the same as you with both my pregnancies, first one I mentioned it to my gp, she sent me to specialist who just made me do all these exercises that were too much for the last 2 weeks of pregnancy. Then all was forgotten and birth was awful.

Second pregnancy I again researched it and found out that you are meant to be treated with care with this condition, your legs are not meant to be straind apart too badly during birth. I had little faith this would be taken into consideration, it was just another thing to try and remember at the time to be listened to about.

As it turned out I had an accidental home birth and no problems, it was a although fast and furious actually a gentle experience.

The only other thing I found out was it is best to take small footsteps, ease yourself up and down from sitting carefully and if you have to push a buggy again - small steps.

Best of luck

My physio suggested kneeling and leaning on the sofa. Baby looloo was born 3 weeks ago and I did this. it wasn't very comfortable but it does mean your knees can't move apart. Only took 5 mins for the 2nd stage so i didn't have time to get more comfy with a pile of pillows or something else to lean on,i've read that it is often the case with spd that the 2nd stage is very quick.

Hiya, not sure it's as bad as yours, but I have been having hip/back problems too. After a bout of sciatica last year I skipped the NHS referrals and got straight in with an osteopath that was recommended by a friend and has experience with pregnancy problems (about £30 a session). He found I had a misaligned pelvis which was probably behind the sciatica as well as the hip pain/clicking (I felt like my hip wasn't in its joint properly- which it wasn't!). After a few sessions I am absolutely fine, so would recommend going and seeing someone if you have time. When you lay in bed, lay on whichever side is less painful, with a pillow between your knees to relieve pressure. Try not to sit for long as this is the worst thing for you, only bend straight or squat- no twisting to reach things. Regards birthing positions, my osteopath said I should definitely tell midwife, get it written in my notes and tell everyone when you actually go into labour. As the above posts say, try not to spread your legs too wide, try kneeling on all fours or squatting down rather than laying on your back and pushing- basically try to move around as much as you can.

Thanks for the replies. The sitting for long periods was mainly due to my job but have started maternity leave now so that shouldn't be as bad. I have mentioned it to my midwife but don't think she has written it in my notes.

During the day it isn't too bad more of an ache but at night it does get quite painful.

LouLou congratulations on the birth of your little one. 5 mins wow that is super fast it was over an hour with DD2!

Avoid stirrups.

I gave birth to ds2 kneeling up on the bed with the head end elevated to lean against.

We only just made it to hospital - he was born 5 minutes after we arrived so I didn't have a lot of time to get too settled!

On hands and knees was what I was told...but I had a caesarean so didn't get to test the theory out.
