Do newborns need socks?

I think we have most of what we need for our end of August baby (baby grows, little no arm/leg baby grow things etc) but do newborns need socks?

I found that they don't need socks until they are a few weeks old and you start putting them in 'real' clothes. When they are in babygrows with feet they don't need socks as well. Also I received loads of socks as presents. So probably no need to buy newborn socks.

Have you seen the price of them though? we've been paying £2 a pair - I buy OH 3 pairs for that lol

if it's cold put them in a babygrow with feet

They pull them off. Stick with baby grows or those little trousers with feet.

Or if you have a little girl tights are good.

Tights work just as well on boys....

I have bought socks and romper suits rather than babygrows/sleepsuits as I found with DS that the feet where the first thing he outgrew. They always have cold feet so I would feel guilty if he had nothing at all on his feet! Depends when baby is due of course and they do fall off a lot, been recommended baby gap socks this time so been stocking up on Ebay

I've found some very cheap socks on Mothercare's website (£2 for a pack of 5) ... I assume this is cheap, I'm simply trusting that it seems cheap.

Tights sound like a good plan though, even for a boy. Nobody has to know ... although obviously pictures will be taken to show future girlfriends.

I'd get a few socks tbh, my newborn is wearing them at the moment. Its too warm to wear a babygro/sleepsuit with feet but with just a little vest she gets a little chilly in the early evening. Putting on a pair of socks, ours go right up to her knees, seems to be just right.

They are absolutely adorable though, and one day, when your youngest child is 4, a tiny sock will somehow work it's way out of a cupboard and into the wash and you will weep.

You will get bought enough to keep a centipede warm.
My 5 month old DD has worn about 3 of her 40 odd pairs.
Little tiny socks are heart-meltingly cute though.

The one time socks are invaluable is before the heel prick test - our MW was so pleased our DD had 3 pairs of socks on and nice warm feet as apparently it can take a few attempts if the heel is too cold

Slight diversion there - I gave up with socks on DD. She was an April baby and through the summer socks just would not stay on and I gave up trying to keep them on - although if it was chilly then socks inside a sleepsuit was quite effective. I did used to carry her in a sling a lot so was very aware of how warm she was while we were out and about. Her feet were rarely cold.

I figured I could probably cope without them, but then I saw socks and all sense went out of the window and they are so small and tiny and cute and I could imagine my teeny baby's foot inside.

So if you can not buy them you're a stronger woman than I.

It was 38 degrees the day my son was born and cooler in his incubator than on the ward... he still needed socks the first couple of nights - especially as he was small and his babygros didn't fit well around the feet.
