12 weeks plus nuchal fold and bloods good. Midwife said NHS tests not needed now?

I had a private nuchal fold scan and bloods test, which came back very good. My midwife said I wouldn't need the NHS blood tests later on. However, I have noticed on this site how many NHS results are different to private ones. Should I ask for it anyway or stick with the 'happy' results?

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along but as far as I am aware, the nuchal + bloods is a much more accurate test than the 16 week blood tests which are generally done on the NHS.

Or is there an NHS nuchal done in your area ??

Unfortunately not, we went private because I was worried as I am 34...

In which case, I really wouldn't worry. Like I say, I'm pretty sure the 16 week NHS bloods can be a bit hit and miss. The nuchal scan you had is much more likely to be accurate. You'll have enough blood taken throughout the next few months, I'd be glad to give this one a miss if I were you

Sorry - just found this - basically the test you have is 80% accurate, the NHS 16 weeks bloods are only 60-65% accurate

"What other screening tests are available to me?

Depending on where you live various types of screening tests will be offered, making it a bit confusing! Currently the most common one is a blood test offered around 15 to 16 weeks. This is taken to screen for Downs Syndrome and is known as the Double, Triple or Quadruple test depending on which of the hormones they are testing. This test also screens for Spina Bifida at the same time. This test offers a 60%-65% detection rate of picking up pregnancies with potential problems.

Some Hospitals offer First Trimester bloods instead of the 15 to 16 weeks blood tests. These, in isolation of any scan, have a 60%-65% detection rate as well. Another test offered by some Hospitals is a Nuchal Translucency scan performed during a dating scan. This is when they measure the fluid at the back of the baby's neck. The more prominent the fluid space is, the greater the risk can be of the baby either having a potential genetical problem. It can be linked to a fetal heart problem. This test is more accurate than the blood test at 15-16 weeks, with an 80% potential detection rate if performed."

Hi ladyopheliastar

I wouldn't bother with your 16 weeks bloods if I were you as I did and it has just caused a lot of confusion for me my private combined results gave me a 1:1128 risk nhs gave me 1:5 off bloods!!

Its up to you of course but like Tillscoutsmum said the combined is a lot more accurate.

Hope your well and congratulations x

I too am going for a private NT scan. I'm 38 and have had 3 miscarriages, so the extra scan at 13 wekks gives me a little reassurance and I'll be away from 15 to 18.5 weeks so the blood test would be late.

The combined 12week scan and bloods is much more acurate and less likely to give you a false positive, so I would say if you've had good news stick with it and save you blood.
