Putting vaseline on baby's bottom before first nappy

Someone has recommended putting vaseline on baby's bottom before their first nappy to make it easier to clean the wonderful tar like first poo off....

Has anyone else heard of this and would it even be possible to hospital or does the midwive just put the first nappy on?

If we asked them to pop vaseline on baby's bottom would the midwives think me mad???

Not PFB at all, I used only water till DD was 3 or 4 months and will do with DC2.

What I will be doing differently is knowing that DC2 is mine and I can do what I bloody well like rather than the first time when I said to my mum 'Am I allowed to pick her up?'

My mum was like this 'Of course you can, she's your baby!'

JamieJay My HV told me to look at the ingredients list on back of pack of wipes before I bought any. She said to avoid any with alcohol in them (eg Johnstons) as alcohol will dry out the skin.

I took her advice, and 5 month old DS has never had any nappy region skin issues

We used cotton wool and water and never had an issue - the only thing the MW suggested was not to have them too wet (squeeze most of the water out) as the water just makes then slide over the poo. Slightly drier and they stick to the poo and clean it off. Also cottonwool pads are much better the little balls which are too small and you need a handful to get the job done and the pleats are big enough but if you need extra during the change then you have one wet hand and a whole packet of cotton wool coming out and you need an extra hand to tear it off.
