Worried about miscarriage

Tried for 7 years to get pregnant and discovered a week ago that i was. 6 weeks today. Sore breasts, but no morning sickness or other symptoms and am v worried that when i go for a scan there won't be a heartbeat. I've booked with Dr Gibb and am seeing him for the first time in 13 days, so I'll be nearly 8 weeks. Can anyone tell me how likely i am to be able to see a heartbeat at that scan? Am worried because when i took the Clearblue test a week ago it said 2 -3 weeks so I'd be expecting it to say 3+ weeks by now and the one i took this morning still said 2 -3, so I'm worried that my hcg level isn't rising.

Oh you poor thing. There's no point me telling you to try and relax or try not to think about it too much is there?

Try and focus on the positives:
-you got a bfp! It can be done even after all that time. Good to know.
-you haven't had any bleeding thus far (true?).
-you have v sore boobs, a symptom.
-you haven't had nausea yet that has vanished, so it may be yet to come or you may just never suffer from it.

If waiting is becoming unbearable, you could ask the GP to do blood tests to see exactly how your hcg levels are rising. They may not be keen to do it but you could explain how long you've been trying and how anxious this is making you.

Everything crossed for you - keep us updated.

Oh, sorry, to actually answer your question:

All being well, assuming your dates are right and you are nearly 8 weeks then, they should be able to see a heartbeat at the scan.

LittlePoot · 16/07/2010 10:53

Congratulations Harriet! I know its easy for me to be optimistic for you (and I can tell you I'm not nearly as good at being optimistic for myself), but at 6 weeks, you sound about right to me. Not everyone gets morning sickness at all (and its rarely in the morning), but often if you get it, it kicks in later (8 ish weeks). 8 weeks is a good time to have a scan because a heartbeat would be visible at that point, if your dates are right. Even though you feel sure of your dates, its very common to be a few days or so out either way when it comes to hormones and scans, so don't pay attention to the clearblue sticks! The conception indicator is a little bit of a gimmick - the accuracy of the result really does depend on lots of things and you shouldn't take too much medical advice from it. The key thing is, it says you're pregnant, you feel a bit pregnant, and you're not bleeding (although that can also be fine) or having adverse symptoms.

Distraction is the key game to play here. Less than two weeks until you know, so just try and keep busy and distract yourself in the meantime. DameGladys also had good advice about speaking to your GP.

I'm a week away from a scan and on my third pregnancy but with no babies to show for it yet - I really do know how anxious you must be. Talk it through on here or with a sympathetic ear at home, and just try and fill the next two weeks with stuff (even DVD box sets!). Good luck! xxx

Ignore the CB tests - they're a nightmare! Not always accurate even if you're 100% sure of your dates and everything is fine.

At 8 weeks you should see a heartbeat.

Thing is you will now spend the rest of you life worrying... worrying about miscarriages, worrying about the 20 week scan, worrying about the birth, worrying about your new born baby etc etc...

I have 3 miscarriages and am pregnant with dc4...really try not to worry about things you can do nothing about... you can't stop/prevent a miscarriage....enjoy being pregnant

angels1 · 16/07/2010 12:11

there was a thread on here a while ago saying how bad the weeks thing on those tests are and how unreliable people had found them - so really don't worry about that.

I had a scan at 7 weeks 5 days and we saw a heart beat then

I worry about everything too, especially after having a mc myself - I worried when I felt really rough how I'd get through the whole time like this, then I'd worry when I felt better that something was wrong - I really can't win! There's nothing I can say that will stop you worrying, just take it easy, keep busy with little tasks that you can manage (but don't overdo it or you'll feel rough), and take each day at a time. I'm now only 8 1/2 weeks and it feels like time is going so slowly through this first trimester, but I find that rather than thinking 'gosh, I've got 2 months to go until the 12 week scan' I just broke everything down into days and weeks, and am pleased at the end of each day that I'm another day closer and I'm still pregnant.

I hope that helps.

Hello. I understand how you are feeling as we have only just had our first ever BFP after a very long time trying and resorting to IVF. Two days ago I had my first scan at 7 weeks. We could see the fetal pole and yolk sac and a flicker of a heartbeat...still not sure I believe it is in me!

I found the two weeks from finding out about the BFP to the scan the longest and hardest of my life (even combining all of injections and egg collection parts and waiting etc). I know it is far easier said that done to relax....all that works for me is to watch a TV series that is light and fluffy and keeps my mind occupied in the evenings. Amazon sells them for a good price and that is how I coped.

Just think...you might have had more liquid in your system when you did the test and there is a simple reason why it will not have "gone up" a step....

FYI - i have not particulary felt sick (just a bit off my food) and by boobs are bigger and more sore than normal. So look like the looney I do and test if your boobs are still sore for reassurance!

Good luck!

Harriet75C · 17/07/2010 16:59

Thanks for all the support! Trying to stay positive...

It is reassuring to hear that the timings on the Clearblue tests are unreliable, so until I have something to prove the contrary I shall assume that the incubus is fine and I'm just lucky not to have morning sickness.

And good luck all of you - I look forward to hearing how your pgs are getting on.

I cannot begin to tell you how inaccurate those conception indicators are.

So congrats!

Harriet75C · 18/07/2010 15:47

Ok, so I know now that the conception indicators are bad, but its gone down from 2-3 to 1-2.

Trying not to climb the walls with anxiety, but it's not working, so if anyone's got any great ideas please let me know!

Well if it helps you..........I had 2 positive 1-2 test, did one a few days later neg, then neg again, went to the chemist brought some + ones the old type and it was pos.

Went to the dr pos. I then took 3 to cp as we had a short break and I could not relax. In 4 days I went from 1-2 2-3 3+.

But I'd go see the dr in the morning and ask for bloods/scan if I were you.

I would not worry yet as those CI are all over the place, but it's definately worth seeing the dr about I'd say x

sotough · 18/07/2010 19:51

hi there, totally understand how you feel. i've had four miscarriages and find the waiting-to-see-if-it's-going-to work-or-not bit of the whole thing just horrendous.
the main thing i wanted to say is IGNORE that conception indicator thing. the reason i can say this with confidence is that like you, i was also trying to use it as a kind of indicator of whether my hormones were rising or not, and it proved to be inaccurate. it said 1-2 weeks the first week of my positive pregnancy test; and was still 1-2 weeks at the end of the second week. when it still said 1-2 weeks i was devastated; convinced the pregnancy had failed again and was even more miserable and pessimistic than ever. however, i am now 14 weeks pregnant and things are looking optimistic, so it MUST have been misleading.
please don't use it again as it only heightens your anxiety.

vmcd28 · 18/07/2010 21:47

yep, at 7.5 weeks I saw a heartbeat as clear as day.

But remember, if you were a few days late to implant or whatever you might not see one, so dont instantly go into panic mode. It should be possible to see the HB with an internal scan from 6.5 or 7 weeks, so if they dont see a HB, theyll probably offer you an internal scan (which is fine and painless, btw)
