Long haul holiday at 29-30 weeks?

My husband is a pilot with a set roster and the only time we have off for a holiday together this year is when I will be 29-30 weeks pregnant. I know I will need a fit to fly cert but would I be insane to travel long haul? Would it be crazy to go 5* relaxation in Thailand at this point? Would love some warm weather but as it will be October we have to look further afield than Europe and the Med to guarantee good weather as all I want is to spend 10 days floating about in the sea with some sunshine. Anyone else flown long haul at this point?

Hi Valbonne09, we just discussed this on another thread if you want to have a look. It is called 'Flying-am I mad'.

I will be taking a long haul flight (11 hours) in August when I will be 31 weeks and I am not worried at all. As long as your GP and MW says it is ok for you to go then you should be fine. The main thing is that you feel ok and make sure you have a very good insurance.

I am doing the same - taking a holiday when I'm 29 weeks - which will also have to be a bit long haul to get the weather!! If you feel ok and you have the insurance just in case, I think it will be a lovely last break before the baby arrives. Enjoy!!

thanks for the support ladies, much appreciated! Now just have to convince husband of the expense right before we lose my income, hmm

Do you need jabs for Thailand? There's another thread going about jabs for travelling and official advice is that you should only go somewhere for which you need jabs if you must do.

Do check with your doc. My BMI pre-pregnancy was high, but at 31 wasn't super high and my GP said that because the risk of DVT is so much higher in pregnancy anyway and high BMI increases the risk, I'd probably have to give myself heparin injections to fly long-haul.

Okay, many thx, will have a think. Am throwing Florida, Caribbean, Mauritius and Maldives in to the mix too now (depending on what deal we can get!) but I agree, don't want to fly if there is a risk hence not booking until the last minute. Luckily jab wise I had everything under the sun when I went travelling a few years ago so shouldn't have to renew anything.

We went to the maldives when I was 27 weeks. had a fab time and no problems what so ever.

29-30 weeks is fine. I'm planning 2 trips around then as I live abroad and have 2 things at home I just can't miss.

The increased risk of DVTs with flying is almost certainly due to the reduced leg space and reduced leg movement. If your husband is a pilot then hopefully you can get some nice ID90 business or first class tickets and stretch your legs out. Failing that, buy well fitting compression stockings and move about a lot.

After 28 weeks most airlines will need you to take a letter with you confirming all is ok. Make sure the letter from your midwife or doctor is dated within a week of travel and says your due date, that its a single pregnancy, and that there are no complications.

And check what the airline's requirements are. You don't want to be stuck in Thailand, or wherever, rushing around trying to be certified locally as fit to fly cos the airline insists on a medical letter that's dated no more than 1 week or whatever prior to the flight.

Have you had your 20 week scan yet? I have just had to cancel a holiday to Turkey that I was due to take at 30 weeks, after my scan revealed an anterior low placenta and although the chances are that this will move up, they will not scan me before I go and the doctors will not sign me a "fit to fly" letter!! I have to admit though that I was a little nervous traveling that late just in case but I'm sure if everything is fine, you will be too. Good luck
