Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone can simply explain what the percentiles on ultrasound scans mean. I'm sure I have things mixed up in my head!

Thanks

I think its similar to growth centiles for children. So if you have a centile figure of 30th, it means that out of 100 babies scanned there would be 30 (or 29 I guess) smaller and 60 bigger than your baby. If it was 50th centile, there'd be 50 smaller, 50 bigger. 90th centile (large baby!) there would be 90 smaller and 10 bigger etc.

So in that case you would be looking at a figure close to 50 for an average baby????

Did you get a print out from the scan of the percentiles? Basically, there is a mark in the middle of a line which is the average and then it shows where your baby tracks in relation to that. Zam72 is right on the numbers thing, but i find it easier to look on the line.

They don't like it if any of your measures are outside i think the 10% and 90% range as obviously that is a more unusual pattern. Mind you, having said that, I had a couple of figures which were way off and my baby is fine.

The scan print offs that I got have the measurements and percentiles written underneath each measurement but I have nothing to compare it to. There is are no graphs or anything else with it, just the numbers relating to each measurement????

Oooh, must be a different type of print out. It is all percentile based so below 50 being lower than average and above 50 being above average!
