Early Scan

Hi -I've been referred for an early scan next week, think I'll be about 9 weeks and just wondered what can be seen/what they can tell.

I am already a mum of 2 girls 12 and 10 who were uncomplicated pregnancies, I am also a mum to a little boy 6 who has a host of disabilities and health problems (no mobility, oxygen dependant, severely developmentaly delayed) which have been there since birth - his condition is very rare but he does not have it genetically, nothing was picked up when I was pregnant but it wouldnt have been with his condition.

I am getting an early scan because previous to having my little boy I had a missed miscarriage at 12 weeks with twins.

I am just curious as to what an early scan will show - I assume they can date from this as this pregnancy is a "surprise" and I was actually being referred to hospital due to unusual bleeding so can only guess how far gone I am.

Thanks anyone who can offer any insight
x

Hi chorlton I had a scan at 10 weeks and you could see everything and hear the heartbeart, did measurements etc. Basic but makes sure they are the correct size and developing as per expected for this gestation.

I hope everything goes well for you & congratulations!

I had a scan at 8 weeks and could see a heartbeat and a vague-ish baby shape with arms and legs. It was quite fuzzy to be honest, but amazing to see. They can take measurements to see how many weeks you are too.

I too had an early scan at 8 weeks as I have had 3 previous miscarriages.

Fairly fuzzy babyshape and a heartbeat. Certainly enough to keep you going for the next 4 weeks (we have our 12 week scan on Tuesday)

Hope all goes well.

Thanks everyone, I had also wondered if I got an early scan if I got one at 12 weeks. Does this depend on your local health authority?

I paid for a private scan as I didn't have a valid reason to go to an EPU and there isn't a walk in one where I live.

I just wanted reassurance that all was ok. They cost about £100. You will definitely get a 12 week scan though, it is ususally the combined test NT scan to check for downs, depending on area again. Your midwfe should be able to tell you.

I had a 7 week scan yesterday and it looked like a snail! The yolk sac was like the shell ontop of the slug part...you can see the "heart" beat.

foreverastudent · 15/07/2010 14:45

Do you know that early scans are done vaginally?

afterivf · 15/07/2010 14:58

Mine was! But it was like an old friend (hee hee) after all of the vaginal scans you have when you go through IVF!

TattyCatty · 15/07/2010 14:59

I had quite a few early scans and the 7 week one showed a little kidney bean with a flickering hearbeat. By 10 weeks, the bean had grown into a fully formed baby shape with moving arms and legs, doing summersaults . I had all my scans privately but have friends that have had early reassurance scans and still got to have their 12 week scan. They'll also be able to date from your scan based upon CRL (Crown Rump Length).

Scans after 8 weeks often don't need to be done internally.

They can date you but it won't be as accurate as doing it 10-14 weeks as the baby is so small the margin of error is relatively bigger.

chorltonandthewheelies · 15/07/2010 15:07

Thanks everyone, not too bothered if its an internal probe, after having my first daughter I left my dignity at the hospital door and never picked it up again!! Last time with all the complications with my son I had every man and his dog having a good look with their miners helmets on!! (well thats how it felt at the time ;-]
