disposable vs washable breast pads

My colostrum is starting to come through, and I've currently got a pack of disposables to see me through, but I'm tempted by the washable ones.

Are they any more comfortable (disposable ones are making my nipples itch!) and do they work out any cheaper?! Should I get more than one pack?

I got mine from here - worked out cheaper, and they're so pretty I make my own now though.

Aww, the scottie dog ones are sweet!

How many would you say to get? I'm hoping to bf as long as poss... (fingers x-ed)

It's pointless me trying to make them - I'm useless with a needle and thread, apart from stitching buttons back on! I'd probably sew them onto my bra, or even me! (It has been done before now...!)

I use both - reusable ones to stop the disposable ones sticking to my nipples. I got these

romaniabound · 14/07/2010 13:32

Queston about reusables - I bought some first time around and they were rubbish. They just leaked the whole time (think my milk supply was very plentiful!) and I ended up going back to disposables and had to use them for the whole year until I gave up BF.

Are there any non-leaking reusables?

Also has anyone used those Lilypads silicone rreusables? They look quite promising but a bit hot, so I would like to hear from someone that has used them before I fork out 15 quid.

Thanks!

nowwearefour · 14/07/2010 13:33

i found disposables leaked for me and reusables were brilliant. cant remember which ones i use though i will look it up!

Poledra · 14/07/2010 13:44

I used Avent reusables, which suited me fine. I think I had about 12 but also kept a box of disposables for not-quite-managing-to-do-the-laundry emergencies.

I did try some of the Lansinoh ones, as they're shaped and I thought they might fit better. Not on my 34HH knockers, they didn't...........

ChocolateMoose · 14/07/2010 13:56

Used Mothercare Ultra-thin disposables at first for maga-leaking weeks, then Mothercare reusables after that. Are the Avent ones the thick ones with lace backing? If so, I had some of those and they were awful, you could see these circles on my boobs through my clothes.

Poledra · 14/07/2010 14:07

Chocolate, yes they are, but you couldn't see them through my industrial strength maternity bras...........

nagoo · 14/07/2010 17:05

I used the lilypads, and in the main they were great, but in one of those 'I can hear a baby crying and need to feed it now' involuntary lactations I did find that they filled up a bit

CardyMow · 14/07/2010 19:25

The only disposables I found that didn't mae my nipples itch, or rip my nips when I pulled them off are the Johnsons ones. Why are a lot of them plastic backed?? The lilypads I have looked at this time, but am wondering if they will cope with my (always plentiful) milk supply, when I have to use 3 on each boob at a time of either disposables or reusables??

parkj83 · 14/07/2010 20:24

3?! that is a plentiful supply!

I've never been that heavy, but saying that, I can't really remember what it was like with DS - spent most of the 3-4 weeks I had milk crying

I do remember my milk gushing out every time I had a bath though.

I think the plastic is supposed to stop it leaking into your bra/top (am I stating the obvious? Probably! )

I'm really starting to lean towards the reusables, more for the whole itchy thing. I'm stupidly sensitive at the moment, and it's quietly driving me potty!

I used Lansinoh reusables for general everyday use (with one or two folded up hankies at night as well, because the cotton was softer against my skin) but had the Tommee Tippee (hate that name!) disposable ones for if I was going out, just because they were less visible through my clothes.

SirBoobAlot, I love that site, do you know of something like it in the UK, other than eBAy?

DomesticG0ddess · 15/07/2010 07:53

Ignore that, I didn't realise you could also find UK stores on it!

Octaviapink · 15/07/2010 08:05

I used the Boots washable ones, and they were pretty good. They did go grey, though, and I found the bound edges showed through clothes. I found the disposable ones made my nipples itch as well - I think they use the same absorbent gel that they put in disposable nappies.
