Anterior low placenta and travel?

Hi, I'm 40 years old and 23 weeks pregnant with baby no 4! I was told at my 20 week scan that I had an anterior low placenta but they didn't seem overly worried. I've got to go back at about 36 weeks. My dilemma is that I have a 2 week holiday booked to Turkey on 21 August with my whole family and don't know if I should be going. I will be 30 weeks pregnant by then and will require a doctors note to fly. I also have A RhD negative blood and need to go to hospital for an Anti D injection if I have any bleeding at all. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Bethy
I can't offer any advice as I haven't travelled yet, but just to say that I also have a low anterior placenta (not covering the cervix) and I'm flying to the US next week when I'll be 26 weeks. I've been to the doctors to get a fit to fly letter and to talk about if it's all ok, and she seemed to think it would be fine. She just advised to do things like drink lots of water, walk around as much as you can on the plane, do leg exercises etc.

I also have to have my AntiD injection due to being Rhesus Neg but I'm having this when I get back at 28 weeks.

I have also arranged insurance to make sure that my pregnancy is covered in case I need to go to the hospital for any reason. I used Insure and Go which were really helpful.

I'd go and see your doctor and ask for their advice and see what they say - I'm sure it will be fine. HTH

i had an anterior low placenta with my 1st two pregnancies, flew with both of them no problems, can't imagine that it would make any difference over and above the usual pregnancy/flying issues

Sorry to be a rain cloud but I had low-lying placenta (covering) diagnosed at 22weeks. Flew at 29 weeks with fit to fly letter and only a 1hr flight! Ended up in hospital after a significant bleed whilst on hols, bled again on landing back in the uk and have spent the last 6 weeks in and out of hospital with further unexplained bleeds despite the placenta position no longer being a concern.

I dont have the added complication of being rhesus neg and cant say for definate if this would have happened regardless of flying but would I take the risk again....I'm not so sure!Though I would kill for 2 weeks in the sun right now

However, I'm sure this is incredibly rare (I'm definately being treated as a bit of a rarity in hospital!) and you'll be ok......just make sure you are fully aware of and comfortable with the risks.

Thanks for that. I have now spoken to doc who advises me not to go!! And a midwife at the hospital I'm going to and she says should be fine and has arranged a scan for 20 August, the day before I fly!!! I now feel even more confused and really don't think I can leave it until the day before I go to make my decision!! B
