Can I ring a MW at just 9 weeks?

I have severe morning all day sickness and really struggling to function, it has got increasingly worse since friday and only kept one crap meal down since then, I am sipping water and lemonade (heard fizzy drinks are supposed to help) but its coming right back up again.

I couldnt get in with my GP this morning and they are reluctant to "treat" me anyway because I am under a consultant and the early pregnancy clinic.

I am due at the clinic on Thurs morning, which at the moment seems a life time away. EPU is really only for scary stuff like mc, bleeding etc.. Which I dont have at the moment, although have history of 7mc's

I havent been booked in with a MW yet because, well, i barely ever get this far and i have too many empty notes. I did call the community team and register my pregnancy this morning.

So short of going to A&E I am not sure what to do. Cant really ring EPU can i? Will the midwife be able to do anything?

Pretty sure I am dehydrated, feel dizzy, weak, shaky, clammy and headachy

Think you need to see someone. Can you see the EPU sooner with a phone call? Otherwise see GP.

A (slight) positive is that severe sickness is usually a sign of a stronger pregnancy.

Congratulations btw

You need to see a GP, not a MW. Can you call tomorrow and get an emergency appointment?

In the meantime ditch the lemonade and try just water. Tiny, tiny sips.

Julezboo · 12/07/2010 16:55

I cant try again in the morning with the GP. It's the kind of place where you have to ring on the day, by tthe time you get through all appts are gone I tried crying at them and they said to call out of hours later when they open

I hate gp's - i have so many run in's with receptionists. This is an emergency- you have had a history of miscarriage, and are feeling awful. At the very least you need your blood pressure taking. Is there a walk-in clinic near you? We have the same type of appointment system and it is really annoying.

If you don't usually get this far it is hopefully a good sign. Everything crossed

Jacksmybaby · 12/07/2010 17:00

That's crap of them.

Can you ring the out of hours service now then? At mine what happens is that someone takes your details and a doctor calls you back within an hour or so to advise you, then if you need to see someone there is an out of hours clinic at the hospital (not the same as A&E).

oldmum42 · 12/07/2010 17:11

In my area you can self-refer to EPU, and they regard an early scan (around 7 weeks) as normal for anyone with several MC, but as they are due to see you on thurday (or did you mean you are going to the GP clinic?), they won't move it forward unless you do get spotting etc.

You sound dehydrated, and I'd recommend the following (also great for kids with d&V bugs), shake a bottle of full sugar lemonade/cola, gently let out the fiz, repeat until it's flat, or nearly flat. add a pinch of salt to the bottle (as much as you can get between finger and thumb, or about a quarter teaspoon). Drink.

If you are throwing up as badly as that, you are losing valuable salts from your body, and some of your symptoms will be from that, and if you can't get it under control, you will end up in hospital with drip (you could pass out if your electrolytes get very unbalanced) - not meaning to scare you, but I'd rather drink flat salted coke in the comfort of my own home, than have a drip in my arm!

I'm not sure if there are many drug treatments for sickness they'd use at this early stage tho'.

Rocklover · 12/07/2010 17:25

Call the out of hours dr and they should be able to prescribe anti-sickness medication over the phone. Make sure you stand your ground though as some drs can be very keen to brush you off.

I got my medication prescribed over the phone as there wasn't an available appt for over a week. But, my surgery is lovely, lovely, lovely, so they may be an exception rather than the rule.

Julezboo · 12/07/2010 17:34

Sorry should have made it clear will be seen by cons for scan on thurs, having two weekly scans due to history and current medication.

Out of hours doesn't kick in until 7 and in wales so no walk in centres. Out of hours will give me an appt to go down to their surgery at the hospital. Will do that I think.

Thanks everyone

Julezboo if you cn get to see a Doctor then they CAN give you drugs this early and it really will help. I've been on sickness drugs since week 6 (now week 8) and although I'm not happy about it, it means I feel like I can cope most of the time.

What I once did which worked very well with the doctors receptionist to get an urgent appointment was to ring NHS direct (tonight), tell them what's wrong, and they will no doubt tell you you need to see a doctor as soon as possible. If you ring the Doctors tomorrow morning for an appointment and if you are told there are none left, tell them you have already spoken to NHS direct and they said you NEED to see a doctor TODAY as you need urgent medical care. It worked for me when I did this - she changed her tack straight away and 'found' an appointment for me. Of course, you can only do this if NHS do tell you you have to see a doctor ASAP, but I'm sure they will based on what you said

FanjolinaJolie · 12/07/2010 18:06

Try tiny sips of water or juice with ice cubes in, I found I could stomach it when it was really cold.

Failing that even frozen or homemade ice lollies will help to rehydrate.

It's a catch 22 because being dehydrated makes you feel more nauseus but then you can't make yourself drink when you feel so crap.

I was vomitting up to ten times a day but I still could not be treated and really was sent away to rest and hope it improved. Which it did luckily by 11 weeks I was not throwing up just retching a bit during the day.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

spilttheteaagain · 12/07/2010 18:24

Julez I found sucking ice cubes helped. Or maybe just licking if you can't bear it in your mouth.

And yes you need to see a GP and you certainly can and should. I went at 5.5 weeks with bad sickness and they prescribed for me, so once you've managed to get an appointment you should get some treatment.

Hope they sort you out with some drugs that work.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 12/07/2010 19:14

Yes, you can certainly call the MW. Most surgeries have a separate number you can call her on (MWs are independent practitioners, after all). But you should also see your GP and let them know, as others have said - there might be something a GP can do. Have you let your consultant unit (I presume that's the consultant for miscarriages?) know how much you're suffering?

Julezboo · 12/07/2010 22:18

Thanks all,

I came to bed as soon as DH got home, dozed on and off. Still not kept much down, with be ringing the GP first thing and demanding to be seen.

Last appt at consultant was two weeks ago, they did give me cyclizine but it didnt help at all. When I see GP tomorrow they will call the hospital in panicky mode before admitting me or prescribing anything so they will know ahead of appt on thurs. If I cant get in with GP I will call the EPU tomorrow.

Did you manage to get an appointment?

Lulabel27 · 13/07/2010 12:50

Hi
I know lots of people have advised already but thought I'd throw mine in!
Was exactly the same as you this weekend couldn't keep anything down, not even water.
I rang GP yesterday after nearly passing out, shaking, terrible headache and gave symptoms to receptions saying I'm 11 weeks pregnant.
GP rang back 2 hours later and said:

Take one sip of water every 15 minutes. If it doesn't stay down (it didn't) then go to A&E as I'd be v dehydrated and there's no rehydration over the counter medicine I can take.
I went to A&E and was put on a drip for a few hours. I came out last night and feel FINE this morning. Totally bizarre but so glad I went and i actually feel normal today.

So maybe try the sips thing, if it doesn't work just get yourself to A&E. I was worried about being a nuisance but better that than putting yourself/baby at risk...

angels1 · 13/07/2010 13:19

so glad to hear you're feeling better lulabel

Julezboo · 13/07/2010 15:21

Hey all

Just wanted to update you. I'm in hospital on a drip gp took one look at me and sent me in. Been on IV since around 12 and antisickness stuff was put through IV so not vomiting as much but generally feeling crappy and sorry for myself x

Lulabel27 · 13/07/2010 16:19

Hey Julezboo

So sorry to hear you're feeling crappy and sorry for yourself but please reassure yourself with the fact that this is the best course of action that could have been taken and you've now got the best people looking after. A couple of hours on that and I felt great - I hope this is the same for you.

Please keep us upated.

Hi Angels thanks for the hellO! I will post on our usual thread now with the update!

tigersmummy · 13/07/2010 19:24

You poor poor thing, but at least you're now receiving treatment. Shame on those jumped up receptionists, they should be utterly ashamed of themselves. Hope you feel better soon.

FanjolinaJolie · 15/07/2010 12:48

Are you out of hospital? Hope so by now and that you are feeling better.

FWIW 9 weeks for me was the peak of the nausea and vomitting, it started to gradually improve once I got to 10 weeks and completely gone by 13. I remember the absolute relief the first morning I woke up not feeling like crap!

Julezboo · 15/07/2010 13:11

Still in drip is coming down today though. I still have ketones so they won't let me out until I'm clear of them.

Thankgod for blackberrys keeping me connected to to world!

hope you feel brighter soon julezboo. x

Julezboo · 16/07/2010 22:48

hey,

just wanted to update (cos i hate those threads where you are kept wondering!)

I got home about 7pm tonight, I have had an awful few days. I am still feeling rough and not at all human but at least now i can see people beofre 7pm and I can have toast when I want (they couldnt make it in the hospital ward as its a health and safety risk )

Off to bed now before my alarms go off for my next medication, Tey sent me home with cyclazine and B6. So hopefully in a few days or weeks i will feel better x

Jacksmybaby · 17/07/2010 09:15

Glad you're home Julez.

Cyclizine was a lifesaver for me but I know it doesn't work for everyone so if it's not helping do go back and ask to switch to something else.

angels1 · 17/07/2010 11:45

glad you're back too julezboo. I'm on cyclizine and it doesn help me feel human and that I can cope most of the time, hope it does the same with you. I seriously don't know how I'd cope without it.
