In my opinion it is OK. I eat spicy food so do millions of pregnant women living in Asia, Mexico, India and so on.

PickleSarnie · 12/07/2010 07:11

Eat as much of it as you can before the constant heartburn kicks in in a few weeks time and you can't face anything but bland food washed down with gaviscon swigged straight from the bottle.

mum2oneloudbaby · 12/07/2010 07:56

i'm with picklesarnie. although after not being able to even pass an indian restaurant when pregnant with dd without feeling sick with this one I am struggling on eating as much curry as possible and drinking gaviscon like water

EmmaBemma · 12/07/2010 08:26

Of course it's OK! And you might not necessarily get heartburn later on - not everyone does.

exactly, what do women in asia etc do! stop eating.

japhrimel · 12/07/2010 09:14

It's just the usual food rules, so no uncooked egg, uncooked seafood, be careful about food poisoning, especially with leftovers or ready meals, etc, etc. But that's true of any food!

If you want it, enjoy it. I've completely gone off spicy food.

confusedfirsttimemum · 12/07/2010 09:17

Yes, as long as it's not giving you killer heartburn, it's fine.

I think that these food rules panic women too much. You find yourself wondering if every little thing is ok.

fragola · 12/07/2010 09:32

My sickness has just passed and I'm scoffing as much spicy food as I can before the heartburn kicks in. I did this with the last pregnancy too and all was well. Don't worry and enjoy

NorkyButNice · 12/07/2010 09:37

Why would you not be allowed to eat spicy food?

If you have bad morning sickness then throwing up curry isn't particularly pleasant (I speak from experience) but otherwise there's no reason not to indulge!

Am due tomorrow and eating as much spicy food as I can as it's all I fancy.

5DollarShake · 12/07/2010 09:41

What's wrong with spicy food? I don't get why it might be considered banned - I mean unless you're experiencing heartburn, in which case you'd avoid it for that reason anyway...

PickleSarnie · 12/07/2010 09:55

Because the fun police have banned pretty much everything else?! It's a bit ridiculous though to treat every bit of food as a potential lethal weapon!

Not as ridiculous a question as some I've seen over on a forum with sparkly tickers. They were panicking over there about whether it was okay to eat gingerbread men and strawberries and got into a tizzy because they had accidentally eaten a lettuce leave that they hadn't washed/disinfected/had blessed by the pope first.

LOL PickleSarnie its all so much preasure I ate half a brie sarnie and then nearly burst into tears until DH told me to get a grip!

ReshapeWhileDamp · 12/07/2010 20:00

Maybe it's because there's some folklore about eating spicy curries at full term to 'bring on' labour? And therefore there might be a mental association between eating curries in pregnancy and inducing labour? (And I'm sure the pregnant woman in 'The L-Shaped Room' tried a hot curry to get rid of her baby and ended up with a violent tummy upset, but not a miscarriage. This was the 60's though and I'm sure Lynne Reid Banks wasn't immune to crackpot theories about home abortions.)

It's all rubbish, anyway! I don't think curries work at the end of pregnancy, and they certainly won't bring on a miscarriage now. I craved spicy food throughout my last pregnancy. The other posters are right - enjoy it now, before your growing bump gives you heartburn!

I'd love to tell someone who lived in India that there's a tradition here of not eating curry when you're pregnant... They'd laugh the place down!

storminabuttercup · 12/07/2010 20:27

i'm 34 weeks and had onion bahjiis for breakfast on sunday and have been eating curries since day 1, of course they are ok to eat!

I love curry, but unfortunately too much (even too much pepper) seems to bring on the heartburn. Although gaviscon (free from GP with maternity precription card) helps.

I also read that the baby gets used to diff tastes in the amniotic fluid, so s/he will be used to diff flavoured breastmilk when s/he is born....
