My mum seems to think its cos it will cause the cord to wrap round the babies neck.

Old wives' tale, the position of the cord inside is not influenced by any position your arms or legs make outside! Think about it! How on earth could it make any difference?

The only bad thing it might do is make your legs more prone to visible veins and maybe cause you aches and pains but not for everyone.

Yes - more likely to cause varicose veins. That applies whether pregnant or not but in pregnancy there is an increased risk.

I do it occaionally, but get really bad pins and needles so try not to now.

Good posture is important, it encourages your baby to adopt an anterior postion rather than posterior (back to back). Having your baby in an anterior position makes labour quicker, easier and less painful.

A birthing ball is good for sitting on during pregnancy. It encourages good posture, which helps your ligaments and reduces back ache.

You also want to avoid lying on your back during late pregnancy. Make sure you lie on your side when asleep.

I have to admit that I never heard of that one before. But the chances of the cord getting wrapped around a baby's neck is more likely if the baby is in a posterior position as the baby has to rotate inorder to be born. Maybe that is what your Mum means.
