When should you go for an anti d injection?

Hi, I knocked my bump earlier on a shopping trolley quite hard... One of those embarrassing shopping trolley moments. Anyway I can feel the baby so I know i don't have anything too much to worry about but i'm not sure what classes as an ' abdominal injury ' as it just says you need an anti d after an abdominal injury! Am rhesus negative and am 26 plus 4 so am due to have anti d anyway next week. Are there risks if i don't have the injection?

Bumping for you.

With my first two pregnancies I had anti d at 28 then 34 wks I think but this time only one injection at 28 wks as they have changed it.

On your notes there should be a phone number for community midwives try calling them?

I'd call the MW - if you do need the injection I believe you need it within 48 hours of the injury so waiting till your appointment won't help unless it's on Monday.

You need it within 72 hours of any bump or bleeding during pg, in addition to your injections that you get later in pg anyway.

I had several anti-d injections during both mine as I had unexplained heavy bleeding. There are risks if you do not have the injection, in that if you become rhesus sensitised this can prevent you from having subsequent healthy pregnancies. In the worst case your baby can be at risk of being a "rhesus baby" where your immune system attacks the baby's red blood cells and causes baby to become anaemic. This can affect mental development amongst other things.

Of course, your baby might also be rhesus negative in which case it is at no risk whatsoever, but unless your partner is rhesus negative, you won't know the baby's blood type till after birth, so best not to take the risk.

BTW if you've just had a routine rhesus injection, you should be covered, but best to check with your midwife.

Thanks all. Spoke with Mid wife earlier and basically any knock or bump to the tummy and you need to go in even when there is no bleeding or anything!

Unseen- the midwife agreed with the 72 hour thing so thankfully nothing to worry about am going in this evening after work!
