DD (16mths) interested in potty - go for it?

We are currently potty training DS, who is 2yrs 7mths, (very) slowly but surely we are getting there!

However, my DD2 (16mths) has decided that she wants to do this whole potty game too! When I put DS on the potty, she wants to sit too, and when I ask DS if he needs it, she toddles over to get there first! Yesterday I sat both them on potties while I read to them, and lo and behold - minutes later DD2 had done a wee, and she stood up and started clapping ! At which point DS started trying with all his might to do something too !
Then this morning, she did it again for DH!
She seems to be more interested in the potty than DS!

What do you reckon? Should I go for it and train her alongside DS? Or should I leave it? DH thinks we should train her, but then again he has never been one for changing nappies! I still think she is too young, but then again, this could be a sign that she is ready?

Looking forward to advice and tips as I am new to Mumnet I realise this is a bit of an essay for my first post!

Hi and welcome.
I'd say she is definitely ready and she is encouraging ds which can only be a good thing. My dd was potty trained earlier and quicker than my ds and I think it was because she watched ds doing it (there is 13 months between my dc).

Thanks Jenroy!
I think I shall make a start and see how it goes then. Hopefully, if its not too cold I can leave her without a nappy in the house this weekend, and then if she is still keen, I shall invest in some very tiny knickers!
It's encouraging to hear that it worked for your dc, it's nice when they are close in age isn't it!

I would go for it. Any sign of using a potty is fanatstic. Just think of the nappies you will save.
Girls are often quicker than boys.

Welcome to MN.

Thanks Ronshar! :-)
I'll shall attempt to try, and see how we go! I just have one question though, should I go about it the same way as I am for DS, and treat them the same? Or shall I have a bit more flexibility and let her decide when to sit on it?

Would be great to save on nappies too - especially since I'm expecting my fourth, due at the end of the year!

summer is a great time to potty train, as they can run around outside with bare bums. Just see how it goes. Def more flexible for dd tho

However, beware, my dd2 was trained really early, long b4 2 but regressed when the bew baby arrived and has been hit and miss ever since (she just turned 4)

go for it - we trained DD at 17months, she was out of nappies in the day within 4 weeks

ShowOfHands · 18/06/2010 21:24

My dd asked me to buy a potty for her at 17 months. She was clean immediately, no poo accidents to date (she is 3). Dry took a bit longer but she got there pretty quickly. I was laid back about it, asked if she wanted to go sometimes but followed her lead generally and she did it on her own.

Leave potty out and just encourage her to go every now and then. She must already recognise the urge so let her find her way.
