Potty training SN child - need advice

DS1 is 3.1 and has global developmental delay, possible dyspraxia and very little spontaneous communication. He has a twin brother who we successfully trained last summer when he was 29 months.

We started potty training DS1 yesterday following some interest from him in sitting on the potty and the toilet - role playing DS2. He had no success at all yesterday, 3 wees on the potty today (after sitting him on it for hours) but a hideous mess with poos. He understands and can say toilet and potty, but his communication is pretty poor and he doesn't really request anything (including food/drinks).

We are going to carry on tomorrow at least and probably Monday as well. Our problem is that come Tuesday, he is back at nursery for the afternoons and I'm not sure what to do. Do we put him in pull ups to avoid the hideous mess of poo that is likely to happen. I know the advice is not to use pull ups but I don't know what the alternative is.

Have we started too early and are we expecting too much? Any advice would be appreciated. I've posted this on the SN board as well.

Ive got the same issue with dd4 (autism &gdd)
.She starts school in the summer , and is still in nappies.(not for lack of trying to train). She uses pull ups during day.
The nursery has a smaller potty seat for her and are trying to help us train her -they even got a visual timetable so she can see what shes supposed to do.
dd4 has learned the routeen, but just doesnt get that shes supposed to "perform". .
have spoke to peadi - they think dd4 is just unable to train yet ,as she doesnt "know" the sensations yet - a bit like a baby.Thing is with GDD you have to ignore the childs true age and go with their develpoment age iykwim?.
has your ds got 1-to-1 support at nursey?.

drloves he has got 1-1 support. I think developmentally he is probably between 2-2.5 although his understanding was recently assessed as being age appropriate. He is looking down at his willy when he does a wee so he must be aware of the sensations to some extent. Not sure if he's aware before he does it but I don't think DS2 was to begin with either, he had to learn. How old is dd4?

I'm sure I read somewhere that potties that offer some kind of instant reward (such as playing music or a fanfare when used) can be useful, but this will only work if the child uses it. It could be used as part of a regime where a child is sat on the potty regularly. I think pull-ups would have to be worn between potty visits.

I don't think that sitting on the potty for ages in order to try to catch something will be beneficial. Until ds can tell you in advance of him weeing and pooing, I don't think he will progress with staying clean and dry. But the more he gets used to the potty, and the more successes he has may help him identify the sensations he has with what he actually produces. Don't forget that he will need to look at the results of his efforts as a positive reinforcement with lots of praise from you.

loueytbq , my dd4 is nearly 5 . developmentaly shes around 2 .
we have a potty that looks like a toilet and has a "flush" ...even makes the flush sound..plays music - she wont go near it .have sticker charts ,small reward box that she can choose something from if she sits on potty x times.....keep on trying ..they`ll get it eventually .
