changing to the big toilet

MIL says it is time for DD (just turning 3) to stop using potty and use big toilet. She's too small to get onto toilet alone and would need supervision however she is able to get the potty out herself and use it. She is happy to sit on the potty for 20 minutes at a time which is lovely for a break! On the other hand she is quite happy to use a toilet if you take her there, and uses the child sized ones at nursery alone. Basically, I'm just lazy and using the potty is easier for me, but is there a developmental reason why it is necessary to stop and when should it be done??

dc 2.6 has been using the toilet almost since the begining of potty training (2.4) - he uses a small step to get on the toilet (on his own) and sits on the proper toilet seat.

yes - but is there a reason why this is important? My DD is happy to use a toilet if offered or if we're out, but its more convenient for her to use a potty at home. Am i missing something??

Bump as I was just going to start a thread on this. DS1 (3.2) has been potty trained since Easter and will use a toilet if out and about but prefers the potty at home, have been pondering when and how to ditch the potty...

My dd used the loo from about a month after potty training (at 24m).We have a seat that has a child size seat inside the adult one that the dds can just pull down themselves, and a step stool for dd2.She can easily manage wees on her own but likes me to be there with her .(she is 3 as of Friday).I find it so much easier than her using a potty and me having to wash it each time .

I've been wondering about this too. DD (2.6mo) potty trained at Easter but seems horrified every time I suggest she tries going on the toilet. I don't want to push her into doing it if she's not ready. I'm happy for her to carry on with potty. I was just wondering how long it usually takes for them to make that transition. I've got friends who say it happened really quickly (a couple of weeks or one month from potty training to using toilet).

Bump too as DS (3yo) was trained at Easter and I've been wondering this!

I don't think it actually "matters" tbh.

fwiw both of my dds preferred the loo fairly soon after potty training. However both of them are very small (in size) and both needed help to get clothes down and get on to either potty or loo so it made no difference to me. dd2 has been trained for about 2 months now.

(on the plus side I think it is slightly more hygienic than having to empty a potty. Also easier when out and about if you can just hold them on a loo, but not really a big deal either way)

preggersplayspop · 04/05/2010 21:34

I'm sure it doesn't really matter. If she is happy to use a toilet at nursery and when she is out and about, and you are happy to clean the potty when she uses it, then so what?

I'm sure when she gets a bit bigger she will find the potty less comfy and the toilet more so, and will prefer the toilet. I doubt she will still be using the potty when she is off to University!

Anyway, how do toddlers manage alone on a toilet? We have a step and child seat with handles, but still she has to step up, shuffle round, drop trousers and hoist herself up into position. To get off she has to avoid standing on her trousers and falling headfirst off the step! DD is very tall and reasonably athletic but can't do it alone - how does everyone else manage? Just lots of assitance for the next year...??

I don't think there is a developmental reason, more social reasons, we have had nursery children (3/4yo)who are obviously more used to the potty go and get one and bring it out of the bathroom to use around the nursery, which is a bit of a problem.
However as your DD is ok with using the toilet then it's not a problem.
With my two I just found it easier to take them to the toilet as we'd end up there to clean the potty and wash their hands anyway.
