Taking to toilet vs letting him decide

My DS is 2y 2m and we started potty training on Thursday. Since then I've been taking him every 30 mins to the toilet and every time he wees we clap and give him a sticker etc. I must be taking him 14 + times a day. Most times he does some.

My question is should I stop doing this and let him tell me he needs to go?

We've had no success with poos as they are all in his pants so far.

He's not into his potty and much prefers the toilet.

Any ideas welcome...

My DD is 2y 4m, and has been using the toilet for a couple of months now, and nappy free during the day for about 2 weeks. When we went nappy free I always asked if she needed a wee, and she loved the novelty she would often say yes. Now she's less likely to say yes, but I still ask. I only bring her to the loo if she hasn't asked after a couple of hours, and she seems able to hold on until then, which I think is the key.

So my long-winded answer is don't wait to be told by him yet, keep bringing him to the loo, but try and leave it for longer between times.

I think it's best to go straight to the toilet and bypass the potty, which is an unnecessary step and a lot of trouble to keep emptied and clean.

I always let mine decide for themselves when to go, and to go on their own (they wore pants they could easily pull down) as this is the ultimate aim anyhow. Going by themselves helped prevent the toilet training getting too mixed up with parent-child tussles of the terrible twos and threes too. I reminded them to check their undies about every half hour to begin with to make sure they were nice and dry, to reinforce the idea that the end result of all this, and what is desireable, is nice dry underwear, and as a prompt to remind them to do a quick check of whether they needed to go, without spelling it out and turning it into some kind of doing the opposite of what I said situation.
