DS is 2.6 and not really talking but is very exciting to see me go into the bathroom at any time. if i sit on the loo he moves around so he can see round the back (we have a clear toilet seat - never again!) and watches patiently for action.

he is not PT yet but i do have him sitting on it regularly but only very occasionally will he produce something.

is he learning anything by watching me? is this to be encouraged? anything else i should be doing to get him to understand? he will grow out of this wont he?

Definitely, he is taking it all in and learning from you! I find that DS watches quietly and suddenly later shows off his new skills.

Yip, I agree. You're teaching him that the toilet is the normal place for wee/poo.

yep, another one in favour of letting him watch - he will see then see it as normal behaviour (using toilet, not watching people on toilet . Sounds like he is slowly getting there - i always found the biggest challenge was getting mine to sit on the potty - all of mine seemed to hate it at first. DD2 went straight to using the toilet - may be worth getting a toilet seat for DS as seeing if he wants to go on after you?

I did get one of those toilet seats for DS but he really did not want to sit on it. I think it is a bit to high up at the moment.

although he has not yet quite understood what the potty is for all the time he did today go and get his nanpy change rug (that mummy made) and put it on the floor and lie down on it. i took his nappy off and sat him on the potty but he got off an lay down with his legs up in the air. he really just wanted his nappy changed (he has reusables also home made by mummy).

i think slowly he is getting the idea and hopefully by the summer will have worked it out.

do they just get it one day?

From my own experience, they are all different. DS seemed to do it really quickley. DD1 was a nightmare - never thought we'd get there, but did eventually. She just didn't seem to want to know at all. The turning point for her came when we took her shopping and she picked out her own knickers - then she wanted to keep them dry and was so proud that she had to show everyone her knickers!! DD2 (now 2.7) flat refused to go on the potty before Christmas but always took her nappy straight off after pooing as she hated it. Then, one day in January, she just sat on it and wee'ed! She always used to follow us up to the loo and watch and has always preferred going on the loo. I got her a step and a seat. She is, on the whole, good, but still has her days when she'll spend the whole day peeing on the ruddy floor and then say sorry afterwards -aaaargh!!! I'd say, just be patient, don't push it or make it an issue and whenever he does perform really go mad on the praise! We gave a sticker every time she did something. Maybe let him run around nappy-less for a bit. It will be messy, there's no escaping that I'm afraid It will happen...honest!!!
