Help! DD1 has insisted on going to bed without a nappy. What do I need to do tonight?

She has been potty trained in the daytime for a year but her mappies are sodden in the mornings. However, tonight she announced that night nappies are for babies.

Do I need to do anything? Lift her? Put a potty in her room? She has not even got a plastic sheet, this could be a very messy night.

have everything to hand for a bed change and turn the mattress when you do it, try and put a nappy on her if she wakes but other wise just go with it. DS2 did teh same - sodden nappies but he only had a couple of accidents.

oh dear, there is no way on earth i'd have done it without some sort of matterss protection.

what will you do if the mattress gets soaked??

I think you need to at least put a load of towels under her sheet

CoteDAzur · 01/04/2010 19:44

Is she already in bed? If so, you... pray

If she isn't asleep yet: Put a plastic sheet (or big plastic bag) in the middle of the mattress. Put towel over it. Then put sheet over it all.

Thanks. She is asleep already. I did put several towels under her but did't think of plastic bags.

She is 3.5 so old enough to try, I just haven't because of the sodden nappies.

Should I lift her onto the loo before I go to bed? I have read of people doing that. Is it a good idea.

I would lift her before you go to bed initially. If she is a bit of a night piddler at the moment, it will minimise the risk of a wet bed on night 1 and letting her feel she has failed.

Then you can negotiate either getting the nappy back on over a few days if you think she needs it, or not bothering if you think she's cracked it.

Have you got a shower curtain to make a temporary mattress cover?

We are in the middle of this right now. Dd is also 3.5 and has older sister whom she is constantly copying. For quite some time she has been asking not to wear nappies to bed - she's been daytime potty trained since she was 18 mths old bcos of bad nappy rash. So we said when the weather gets warmer we would let her try, so guess what?

I was dreading it but on tuesday night I put a large plastic bag on her bed and put a few beach towels over that and then a blanket. Put the potty beside her bed and a roll of loo paper and let her do a potty practice before she went to bed.

To our surprise she woke up, without us hearing her, used the potty and was dry the next morning. Since then she's had 1 night when she wet bed a little bit and last night she wet it more than a bit.

Will carry on down this road but think I will get a mattress protector. Can anyone recommend where I can get a good one that might be designed with bed wetting in mind?

you keep your fingers crossed and prepare for a night of checking every half hour.

DreamTeamGirl · 12/04/2010 00:11

This is exactly what my DS did. He just announced one night that he was a big boy now and didnt need nappies
He did brilliantly and never wet the bed once in over 2 years, except for 1 time about 3 or 4 months ago when, to be fair, he had Flu.

Great tip we got was to double make the bed, so
Mattress
Protector
Sheet
Protector
Sheet

that way if they do wet all you need to do is whip one lot of sheets and protector off and you are back in bed in 5 mins flat! Sorted!!!

When my children were born in the 70s and were old enough to try going without nappies, we used drawer sheet over a rubber mattress cover. If child wakes in night wet just pull a length of dry sheet through and put back to bed without too much disturbance

Tonight is my dd's first night without nappies too, her nappies re soaked in the morning as she drinks way too much before bed.

Tonight I didn't let her drink after &.30pm, and I'm hoping for the best... Good luck :-)

Both my two asked to stopped nappies before i thought they were ready, they were less than 2.5 and only just day trained.

I used bedmats for the first couple of nights on top of the bed sheet, then after a few dry nights....which amazingly happened virtually straight away i use a waterproof sheet then a bedmat and then usual sheet.

Still use the bedmats under normal sheet now as they are good in case they are ever sick in nightor suchlike.
