Anyone else got a child 3.6 or older that is still not potty trained?

I decided to do the whole child led thing and wait until DS asked to use the toilet. He went to preschool September so I thought once he saw the other children he would ask to as well. However DS is 3.8 now (well tomorrow) and the oldest I have known a child start asking is 3.6 and is still not interested. When he got to 3.6 I started to introduce the idea to him myself as he hadn't asked yet. Tried stickers, special treats, chocolate buttons, books about potty training, putting teddy and dolly on potty, saying your friends use the toilet etc to no avail. He's seen me use the toilet and I've even weed in his potty myself

I suppose rather than advice I'm just looking for someone else to say mine hadn't done it by 3.6 either!

My dd4 is 4 next month and is still in nappies. She does have health issues though and was very ill last summer when I was going to make a start. That said, she's all there and is quite capable of making the connection. TBH I'm going to wait for better weather ( if we ever get any!) and try again then so hopefully we can get outdoors where any 'accidents' won't matter.

my ds is driving me crazy! he is 3.5 and we have been potty training him since he was 2.5. he showed all the signs of readiness and was starting nursery. a year on and he will not poo in the toilet or the potty. he is dry at night and never wets himself but nothing we do will convince him to do it in the right place. we have tried sticker charts, presents, jar of sweeties. there was a period of about 6 weeks when he had it right but he went backwards and that was six months ago. any ideas? he did used to be terrified of the toilet but he is over that now. he is quite happy to watch dvds all days long there!

Ds1 was 3.5

ds2 has trained this week, at 3.10

coldtits · 23/02/2010 17:49

they don't start asking for the toilet until you have started to show them what the toilet is for.

You need to put him on the toilet every 15 minutes or so and don't use pull ups - have a bare bum. Eventually you will 'catch' a wee. Have a parade about this.

Also try to get him spending some time with a larger boy who wees on the toilet.

Dd2 is 4 in 2 weeks and still in nappies, she has ASD but is capable of being toilet trained, she will sit on the potty or toilet but will not produce the goods. I was going to train her over half term but she had a tummy bug (so not the best time to do it), i am worried that she might not be dry for school in September.

DS1 was 3.7 when he stopped wearing nappies.
Decided one day he was going to wear the pants I had bought for him and that was it really, trained overnight.

We did give him a lolly every time he did a poo on the loo (for the first few months) and he had only one accident when he didnt get to the loo on time.
We also bought a Baby Bjorn kids loo seat as he was a bit worried about falling in the loo.

But I do agree with coldtits about showing your DS what the loo is for and spending time with an oder boy if possible.

DS2 is 2.9 and showing no signs of giving up nappies, think he is the only one at playgroup still in nappies.

coldtits That gives me hope Was that 3.10 for wees and poos or did he do wees earlier (I know a lot of children do poos later than wees)

3.10 for both, not at night, and not particularly reliable for either.

My DS1 is 3.9 and finally getting it this week

Well for the potette anyway, the toilet is the next challenge.

Mostly been bare bum, or just pants, potette handy at all times, lots of rewards, for nothing really (no accidents when out for a walk = button and so on), etc.

I truly thought he'd never do it, despite everyone saying no-one gets married in nappies, blah blah!

Oh and he hasn't done it overnight so don't stress about that!

Yes. DD is 3.6 and looks set to be overtaken by 21 month old sister. I have already posted on this very subject so grateful for advice myself. Will just extend the message I keep hitting myself over the head with ie this too shall pass.

DD has been relatively toilet trained for over a year, about 97% dry at night, but still constantly having accidents and wetting herself during the day or not cleaning up after poos, and saying nothing.

I wish I could cheer you up but I'm afraid for some of us it's just an almighty bloody slog.

whomovedmychocolate · 07/03/2010 21:49

DD 3.5 and will do all poos on toilets but likes weeing in pull ups.

Have discussed it at length, she says she loves wearing big girl pants but doesn't seem to get the connection between peeing and wet pants

Having said, we had an interesting discussion this evening about pull ups and nappies, and I described the difference between elasticated trousers and those that had ties at the waist. Pull ups have suddenly become very unappealing. She thought they were totally different to nappies.

My ds has been dry since October (daytime only) but is still refusing to do poos in the toilet or potty. He seems to prefer doing them standing up wearing a nappy.
Unfortunately when I was potty training him he did a poo in the bath and I reacted badly . Ever since then he says that I get cross if he does a poo in the bath and will hold it in if I make him do it in the toilet.
It is my fault really, and I know that so I'm trying to give him some time to forget the whole 'poo in the bath thing'.
He is now 3.9 and will start school in September so we really need to get it cracked by then!
Trying not to stress about it but failing miserably!

i am at my wits' end. DS is 3.8 and only uses the loo at home or grandma's house. Never at nursery, the library, the park, etc so pooey trouers and pants instead. He doesn't even use the loo at home all the time, only 50% of the time really. It's hopeless i think he's just not that bothered about pooey or wet pants. We tried numerous variations on the reward chart but he only gets that it's a power thing he can use to wind me up

JeremyVile · 17/03/2010 13:46

ds was 3.6 when he toilet trained.
The potty was never successful but getting a seat for the toilet and a step and some pants that he liked worked.
For the first couple of days I would get him to sit on the toilet every couple of hours and read him a story, nothing happened the first few times but sitting there seemed to encourage a wee and eventually a poo.
Once he'd done it a couple of times it all seemed to slot into place.

BadGardener · 17/03/2010 13:53

mine is 3.4 and I'm trying and it's going badly!
Won't be surprised a bit if we're not there by 3.6....

iamreallysilly · 17/03/2010 14:09

My DS was almost 4 when trained. A wise friend, mum of 2 teenagers so been there/done that, advised to start one day, planned, and thru day only at first to tell him Ur big boy now, ur too big 4 nappies/pull-ups, need to use loo when needing and can use pull-ups at night, accidents might happen, but thats ok, clean up without fuss, better luck next time, and keep going. It worked in about 2-3 days wi very few mishaps. Night time came later but with ease, just let him decide when didn't want to wear pull-up at night any more. Think when they're that bit older, more able to learn. Obv u need to decide if ur DC's are ready but to go for it when u think they are. Told friend she should write parenting book, she's always got fab advice

iamreallysilly · 17/03/2010 14:17

Forgot to add, if in nursery or u working, start at weekend or in hols so u are mostly at home for first few days, less stress when accidents, easter hols coming up?

Just seen this thread after I've just posted my own similar one see here.

My DD is 3 & nearly 2 months and we have been trying since the middle of November and seem to be regressing after a positive start. Nice to know there are other mums out there in a similar predicament as most of DD's friends have been trained for months without too much trouble!
