Treats with potty training?

I just want to know what the general perception/opinions are on this. I used chocolate buttons and stickers with my first son during potty training, and it was relatively smooth. It wasn't an overnight thing, but he trained well within two weeks, with the odd accident afterwards. He was 2 years 3 months.

I have tried without treats with DS2 (who has a speech delay), who will be 3 in April. He really didn't want to do it at all. Yesterday, I told him that if he'd have a wee on his potty he'd get a chocolat button, and since then he's had many wees on his potty with quite a few in his knickers. But at least he sits happily on potty and tells me he's having a wee.

What is the general opinion on treats with potty training? Does it work woth some kids and not others? or is it just that I'm a bit lazy and take the easy route??? my kids have a good well balanced diet, with very little treats and chocolate normally so even one chocolate button is very special.

Thanks!
BP

I am using buttons with DD.
She got to 2.11 without showing any interest in using the potty.
I think it's fab if children establish and maintain an interest in potty training without rewards, but I reckon there are plenty who need some sort of extra incentive, be it stickers, chocolate or whatever.

I used choccie buttons and stars for poos but only stars for wees because DD (2.2) took to weeing on toilet very easily.

To be honest I think they need some kind of incentive to want to give up the easy route of the nappy and use the toilet. What that incentive is I think is very dependent on what the childs likes.

We have not been having a lot of success with the potty training even tho. he gets a star for every success, he will still just stand and wee with out looking for the potty to do it in, so this morning i resorted to the choccy button tactic and he sat on it for a while after recieving his first treat cos he wanted another chocolate and then this afternoon he has had a lot of accidents again even tho. i keep telling him he'll get a button if he goes in the potty so i dont know if its going to work for us or not.

We use buttons and stars; had to increase the incentives when it looked like DS was losing interest. However, choc simply doesn't get mentioned for successes outside the house, which keeps consumption down! Hoping to stop once current pack is finished and no longer in full view in the bathroom.

A useful tip I got from nursery, wedgeitt was to get them to go every 40 min till they get the feeling for it. We've had far fewer accidents since we started doing this rather than just asking if he needs a wee. Hope it helps you too.
