Day 2 and going insane!

We have started potty training our daughter who is 2 years and 7 months. She has been happily sitting on the potty every night and every day at nursery but has not done anything on it.

Yesterday I put big girl pants on her and had a potty in the living room and bathroom. We have sticker charts ready and choccie buttons too. I have been putting her on the potty every 45 minutes but nothing. Then she does a wee in the kitchen on the floor or on the carpet.

Sometimes she is sitting watching the tv for ages on the potty but still nothing.

In 2 days we have had 1 tsp of wee on the potty and half a poo (caught by me when she had done it in her pants)!

I am losing the will and need some encouragement or sign that she is progressing as it really doesn't seem like it. Is is just not ready or will it click.

I took 2 days off work so I had 5 clear days to make some headway. If we have no improvement by day 5 I think I will give up but I don't want to. I just don't know how to get through these next few days.

Any advice?

Thanks
Antonia

we in almost the same boat leweslady and this my 2nd dd i'm doing it with! i'm sure others will post otherwise but it really is just a really long process! stick with it if you can and try not to let the stress of it all get to you. shrug off any accidents with a "never mind potty next time" and when she does manage it (as she will!) put all your good reward plans into action. But if it does feel too much put it off for a bit til the weather is better and you can get the pants/floor dried out quicker!! toddlers are all different so try to ignore anyone who tries to tell you they did it in 2 days etc ...and just comfort yourself with the thought that you don't see many teenagers in nappies! my dd is 2yrs 8months btw and i have been trying to stop myself checking out the other toddlers at playgroup to see who is still in nappies!!

Have you tried naked bottom half rather than pants? Then she'll feel different, my dd just didn't get pull-ups but as soon as we had a naked bottom for 2 days and then switched to pants no more wee accidents it was v. strange. Also, have you checked out the potty training bootcamp on here it's very useful.

Other than that lots of deep calming breaths.

Personally I would put her back in pull ups/nappy and try again in a couple of months. DS1 was 2.11 when he was potty trained - we briefly tried at 2.8 but put him back into nappies after 24 hours as he obviously wasn't ready. When he was potty trained at 2.11 it clicked, literally overnight and he was dry at night as well by 3.2. I will not rush to potty train DS2 as I know he will get there when he's ready. I disagree with zapostrophe to expect 100 wees on the floor - that's just really stressful for you and your lo. DS1 was the last of all his friends to be dry during the day but he got it within a day unlike their lo's who were having wees and poos on the floor for weeks and months. DS was also the first to be dry at night, which I'm sure was partly due to him realising the feeling of needing a wee and taking control of his own bladder and not being forced to go on the potty at set intervals. Oh my god Thank you - This has made me feel so much better. Tonight we had 2 more tsp on the potty which is a minor breakthrough.

I suppose I didn't expect it to be instant but I thought (stupidly) that I would see more in the potty than out by today!!!

I just wanted to get her to a reasonable stage by Monday as she is back at nursery by then. Nursery are great and they said just 'give us lots of pants, changes of clothes and we will clear everything up as often as it needs'. BUT I am worrying about leaving her at nursery when she doesn't really know what she is doing!

We have had naked bottom a bit when she refused to put pants on but she does like to pull them up and down. Hates having a nappy on and I've using that as bribery today!!

I like the idea of setting a really outrageous goal and when she beats it it all feels more achievable...Maybe tomorrow we will go for 3 tsp of wee .

I suppose I can't see how normal life will resume until this is 90% better- but I am sure you all feel like that!?

I will post an update soon.....

Thanks again for some really supportive sensible advice.

Hi, I am going through the same with my DS, 2.3 years old. I have been so sure that he is ready but we started today with wearing pants and putting on the toilet every 15 minutes which he has been quite happy to do. But so far we have had two wees and one poo in his pants. I have booked the next week off work so have 10 days to work on this. i don't want to quit now but can feel myself becoming annoyed with my DS for not managing to wee in the toilet and I'm worried he can sense this. I know 2.3 years may seem quite young but several of his friends have been toilet trained and seemed to take to it really well so I guess I am feeling the pressure a bit!

The first few days are a NIGHTMARE but by day 4 ish there should be some signs of improvement. If not then pop her back in pull ups and wait a while

Leweslady · 19/02/2010 14:59

So today we have had 1 large wee on the potty. I had been sitting her on it every 45 minutes but she didn't wee from the moment she got up to just before lunch. So I think I got lucky! Then she did a weeny wee, got her reward and then a bigger wee on the carpet - obviously there was more coming....

So I think this can count as improvement - what do you think?

Bit worried about the level of Peppa Pig watching going on though!

We are doing this at the moment with DD1 also 2.7. By the end of day 3 I was set to give up, as she was getting fed up being put on the potty and the only way I caught wees was using cbeebies on iplayer to tempt her there. But day 4 she just suddenly said 'I want that' pointing to potty and sat on it and did a wee! And since then (now day 6) we have mostly success (including poos), although 3 accidents today when she was tired.... So you might find day 4 is a turn around?
