How do I stop, without discouraging him and when should I attempt to swap?

MORE DETAIL
My son is 2 and 8 months and I have tried to train him (half-heartedly) over the last few months, but I'd put him in undies for a day and he would just keep weeing everywhere, so I would give up thinking he wasn't ready.

Then I went to mothers group for the first time this year and all the other kids his age are trained (during the day). So I asked for some advice and they said to let him run around naked (undies are too hard) and that he would wee everywhere for the first couple of days but after a bit he would 'get it'. Use stickers, or lollies or something for a reward.

I had nothing else but chocolate honeycomb bites in the house and so I started the training and said he could have one when he could do his wee's in the toilet. First day went terrible, he even did a poo on the nice white carpet. But second day (today) was great. He did 2 wees in the toilet and one outside on the grass (close enough for me ;). So I gave him a chocolate each time.

But my son is heavy for his age (I'm trying to work out if he is overweight or not, but not sure yet), and I don't want to keep giving him chocolate (plus there is only one peice left - Mummy wanted a reward too). How long should I keep this up? He has done it well for a day now is that enough?

I think you should probably go out and buy sometihng specifically for TT and use only that. And only give it as a TT treat not at any other time. We did jelly babies with DS1

I gave my dd a chocolate button for a wee and 2 buttons for a poo. When i thought she had really 'gotten it' about 2 weeks I stopped buying them and told her I forgot to buy any more. She soon stopped asking. Hth

Bugger, I've stuffed this up! Nothing I am happy to give him for 2 weeks is going to be as good as the chocolate honeycomb bites. They are quite big. It's going to be a down grade if I use food, so maybe I need to do a sticker chart.

Hi Suze

We did the same, sticker for trying and choc button if she did something. ONe morning she did 8 wees before 7.30am and was as high as a kite!

When that packet ran out I simply told her we didn't have anymore and she just gets stickers now. I draw lots of different charts(no artist!) caterpillars, snakes, flowers, stars etc etc and she puts a sticker on each segment. We hang them in the loo and leave them there so she can see her progress. When she completes a chart (each one has about 8 stickers worth on) she gets something from her treat bag. I went to Wilkos and stocked up on crayons, rubbers, balloons etc. Works really well.

It's been fine and she hasn't asked for chocolate since. Good Luck!

hahahahaha, my son is never even up by 7.30.
I made a chart for the next 10 days. He gets one star (I'm just drawing them on) for a wee and 2 for a poo and he gets an m'n'm of the same colour. When the 10 days are up, hopefully that will be enough. Or if the m'n'm's run out! But they are so small I think this will be OK. So far he hasn't seemed to feel ripped off.
Thanks for all your help!

we are using the chocolate method too!I started training DD (2.11) today, and we need a good incentive as she is just not interested in training, despite reasonable bladder control, tonnes of praise and good understanding of the process.

today she has done 10 nano-wees in the potty (and only one lot of wet pants), as she is aware that a wee=choc button. I sort of firgured that we will "run out" of buttons once she is fairly reliable. DD is also a rather well-covered little girl, and I prefer not to give chocs, but we need a little boost to get past her bloody slightly stubborn streak.
