potty regression - back to pull ups at preschool?

My son is almost 3 and has been clean and dry for 4 or 5 months now. Over the last week or two he has had lots of accidents but is now just doing everything in his pants and not even telling us afterwards. This coincides with starting preschool 2 days(which I understand can often be a reason for this happening)
This morning I was called to preschool as he had a poo accident which unfortunately escaped down his trouser leg and around the room. They told me I should put him in pull-ups for preschool as this is a "bio-hazard". I kind of understand their point of view - but surely putting him back in pull-ups won't help his situation.
Should I put him in pull ups for preschool?
How can I get him back on track as we seem to be back at square1?

Instead of pull ups, what about plastic pants on top of his undies? Then he still feels wet if he goes but poo wont escape round room?

My son regressed after been clean for a whole year when my daughter was born; lots of 'its fine, just an accident' etc. and two weeks later he was as clean and dry as ever.

You are right to be cautious in putting him back into pull ups.

Hmmmm, I think I'd be a bit unhappy with putting him back in pull-ups at this stage. You could try cotton training pants - I've found that they hold poos very well. We used Bright Bots training pants as they fit well round the leg to contain any poo accidents. They look and feel more like real pants than disposable pull-ups so might be a better option?

thanks fo that - I dug out his old washable training pants and used those (I'd forgotten about them). He didn't like wearing them when he was first training and so quickly went to normal pants. Hope it has the same effect this time! Will only use them for preschool though.
Was called in again this morning as he had a tiny accident and they won't change him, which I think is a bit harsh. I'm sure he'll cotton on to the idea that if he poo's he gets Mummy. I think the reason he has regressed in the first place is because he is anxious about me leaving him at preschool. Seams like a whole lot of hassle for a quick wipe and change .
Do other preschools refuse to change kids?

Refusal to change - That sounds a bit harsh to me to.

bingybong - your pre-school's refusal to attend to his toileting needs are illegal under the Disability Act.

I'll try and find the link to the MN thread that discusses this

My poor DS had a poo accident at pre school 2 weeks ago (and I could tell it was a bad one by the state of the clothes, down to socks and up back!!) and they cleaned him up and put him in their clothes, it was not a problem. He has not had any other accidents at preschool (been there since September). They were very kind and they should be really.

I wouldn't put him in pull ups. My DS occasionally has a few days where he thinks it's a good idea to wet himself before he decides it isn't such a good idea after all.

Thanks for your replies.
Highlander - thanks for the info.
I'm feeling confused and unsure about the situation regarding preschool refusing to change him. I don't want to cause any bother, but the bit about a child waiting for their parent to come and having to remain in their dirty pants as neglect is really significant - my son was lactose intolerant as an infant and although much better now he can get very sore if a lactose-reaction poo is against his skin for too long. I'm worried that they will tell me that they won't change him and that he'll have to come back when he stops the accidents (there are no other preschools with places in our area).
