late talker = late potty training?

DS2 is 2.9 and shows no sign of wanting to get out of nappies. There is no rush, I don't mind at all him still being in nappies, but I am curious to know if parents of late talking children have a similar experience. DS never tells us if he's had a poo, and doesn't mind being in a dirty nappy until it REALLY HURTS that he cries his eyes out and his bum is bright red. Most of the time I can smell it (from a distence!) but sometimes he does non-smelling poos and I'm sure he's had a dirty nappy for a while.

He started talking late, only last month really, and before that he wasn't even babbling. He struggles to communicate even basic needs - but has been checked by many specialists and all other areas of his development are OK. He's just not good at communicating. Any tips on potty training? Even up until last month, he'd regularly poo in the bath!!! Experiences? Suggestions? Thanks!

Not in my experience, DD was an early talker with a very well developed vocabulary (assessed by HV as having approx word count of a 5yo at 2yr check) but mostly developed at normal speed in all other areas (walked at 15mo etc).

Potty training she wasn't dry in the day until 3y3m (I tried from 2y6m) and wasn't dry at night until almost 7 years old.

You never can tell, just because your kid is ahead or behind their peers in one area of development it does not necessarily follow that it will be the same for everything else.

ds1 was late-ish to talk (though a bit earlier than your ds) but potty trained at just over 2.
took me by surprise as I wasn't planning on training him, but one evening he just said "wee" and i said did he want to do it on the toilet, so off we went... never looked back! lol

ds2 also a late talker and not potty trained yet, but he's only 2yrs 3 months

DS talked and pottey trained about the same time - a few words at 2 handful of words at 2.5 sentances at 3. Dry day at 2.5yrs and at night by 3 too! SO late-ish to talk and early-ish to potty train

No, I know of several early talkers that were late to potty train. Know of many average talkers who potty trained early. No correlation IME.

i hd a very late talker (also a boy)
he didnt potty train until 3.

i think if he cannot communicate, u will have trouble, as i did.
what worked with us was sign language, he learnt how to sign nappy first, and we progressed from there. he started talking not long after we PT him, and still signs today if hes poorly and hes nearly 4

nope, both my elder two were very early talkers but dd is 5 and still wets herself and can't stay dry at night and ds1 was trained just before 3 but still has accidents a few times a week at 3.5

mumofsevenplusfour · 31/01/2010 20:58

ds4 late talker but toilet trained himself day and night at 20 months when id planned to wait till 2.5 but was in terry nappies so very aware of being wet so i think its just a case of they do it when there ready applies to both talking and potty training

There's a boy at my DS's nursery who will be 3 in April who and has very few words (less than 10) and those are still hard to distinguish. (Mostly "hello" and "bye" and "more.") He is 100% potty trained and probably would've trained sooner if they had started him sooner at home.

There is no scientific evidence for a link between verbal development and potty training. There is, however, a link between walking and bladder control. DS walked before 9 months and was potty trained by 18 months, all poos in the loo by 15 months. We started gradual introduction at 14 months and "wee" was one of his first words.

in my son's case yes, because he was such a late talker, I couldn't even think about training him until he could say 'need wee'. That wasn't until he was 3 and 3 months.

my little man is approx 3 1/2 and not yet potty trained. He is also very delayed with speech, has been assessed recently as having communication average of a 2y3m old. He asks to have dirty nappy changed but doesn't mind a wet one at all. He knows exactly what a potty is for although is such a big boy now that he doesn't really fit on a potty so we will need to go straight to toilet. When I ask if he would like to use potty or have big boy pants on he says 'not yet Mummy' or 'not today Mummy'! I think that maybe he is being a bit cheeky now but not sure how to conquer this as he is completely NOT open to bribery (don't think he even understands it). My daughter pretty much trained herself so I am feeling a little bit challenged to say the least but have determined to use upcoming half term to attempt the 'stay at home and ruin my carpets' method of training! Anyone have any other bright ideas?!
