I've never believed in pushing kids to use the potty really early. DD is only 16months old and I had no intention of starting her off yet..however I am considering buying a potty tomorrow.
She has been aware of doing a #2 since about 13months and is also aware of the first wee that she does, after that she doesnt seem to take notice, possibly because her nappy is already wet. Though she's had this awareness for quite a while she's never been in a hurry to get cleaned up.
This morning though she was very concerned that she'd 'dirtied' her nappy and wanted to get changed straight away. Ive taken this as a sign that shes ready to begin 'the process' but I'm not actually all that fussed about getting her out of nappies yet because shes still a baby!
Is it a waste of time to get the potty and sit her on it at nappy changes (as suggested by nursery) if i'm not going to reinforce it and push her to ditch the nappies or should I just jump in with 2 feet and get it over and done with??
(plus she is v. small for her age and i'm not sure they do pull ups to fit her!)

We bought DS a potty well before he was ready to actually start using it, he used to put it on his head, fill it with food/toys, sit his teddy on it and generally just play with it!

He understood what it was for but wasn't interested in using it for toilet purposes for a little while, but had great fun in the meantime and it meant, once he was ready, it was intimidating at all.

I'd go for it, it can't do any harm - can it?

For us, the whole process took months, even a year. DS first started using the potty early. He had all the classic signs but resisted any attempt on my part to ditch the nappies.

I decided to leave well alone, when following the birth of his younger brother he decided to wear pants. He must have been around 2.5 or so, and after a few weeks he became dry at night.

From my experience, I'd wait. But all children are different.

Oops, I should just add that there was no push to get him out of the nappies he was allowed to go totally at his own pace and we used the potty alongside pull ups and bare bummed baby!

I only meant buy the potty, even if your DD doesn't use it for what it's intended, she'll enjoy playing with it.

dont worry wubblybubbly, i understood what you meant
Iv taken a combination of both because she's told me each time she's done a #2 today and once just before so shes def aware of whats going on.
We bought the potty, she chose it and decided to sit on it (fully clothed) to eat her dinner?!
We're popping her on it for a few mins after #2's but she's not done anything in it yet and she's def not bein told off or anything for not using it.
So in conclusion, no major potty pushing at all but its in the house and so far its a funny chair to sit on at dinner time xx
