Hello - I am new and need PT help!

My daughter is 2 1/2, talks very well and is showing many of the signs of being ready to potty train.

I bought Gina Ford's book who recommends sitting them on the potty at bathtime for 5-10 minutes to get them used to it. This is before you go cold turkey and just have pants on. she says that you should not progess to stage 2 (no nappy) until you have mastered this stage.

My problem is that she will not sit still. She sits on it for 1 minute then she pops back up again to have a look and wanders off to check out our bathroom draws. She comes back but does the same thing over and over again. I have tried to say to her that if she stays on the potty for a story she can have a sticker but she doesn't really care.

I am tempted to ignore Gina and just go the whole hog as I think that she is one of the children who don't care about having a wet or dirty nappy. She needs to really feel wet/dirty.

My questions are:-

  1. Is it normal to be a jack in the box on the potty?
  1. Should I just go for it now?

I must admit going for it is more appealing that this half-hearted 'sitting on potty' lark.

Advice welcome.

Thanks

Antonia

My daughter is being potty trained and does the same. I've had better luck since I started to read to her on the potty a favourite book or two

Yes, I read to her also but she gets up mid-book and wanders off. Maybe I need some new potty books??

I've just realised you said story in your OP. Sorry about that.

I can see why it's worth getting them used to a potty, as it must feel weird to them. I haven't read this book I'm using another.

I confess I've gone into big pants (as I call them) already, as my DD loves it! And I say if you won't sit on the potty, you'll have to go back into nappies. Guess this only works if your little one likes knickers instead?

I sit her on the potty every 45 mins or just after a meal at the moment, it's early days though.

Maybe I'm just mean but it seems to work for me. My daughter turns 2 and a half at the end of this month and I figured she was old enough to reason with. But this could just be something that works with only my daughter.

Be interested to read anymore tips you get though, that may help me along as well.

Sorry to not have read your OP properly.

Oh don't worry!! I am coming round to this way of thinking. I am going to take few days off work to give me 5 clear days. Then its bye bye nappies hello knickers. I have every faith in her!

I will keep up the sitting on the potty thing until then (about 4 weeks). I need that long to get myself prepared

Now my husband is stressing about the carpet and furniture!!! Any ideas?
