hi there, 1st time poster but very much a long time lurker!!!

DS1 is 2.8 and we started potty training on Tuesday. Left him naked from waist down and he'd race off every time to the potty when he wanted a wee. 6 times in a day - great success!! then he did a poo on the floor even though i'd asked him 10 seconds before that if he needed the potty but one accident first day and i thought great.

yesterday we put him in pants but i think he thought they were a nappy and did a wee straight away in them. took them off and left him naked the rest of the day, again, with great success.

today i really felt he needed to get the hang of pulling his pants up and down but so far he's had 3 accidents in them and whips them off straight away as he clearly doesn't like them being wet.

he does take himself off to sit down on the potty but with no success but still loves washing his hands, etc. he gets stickers and choc button if he gets a wee in the potty. we're now onto the 4th pair of pants since 9am and my gut feeling is to keep going with the pants rather than stripping him down again. he does race off when he's doing it so its not that he's particularly happy doing the wee in his pants.

sorry - that was a rather long explanation wasn't it but wonder if anyone would share a similar experience / tips / advice. thanks so much.

I started DD in pants but she was weeing in them almost immediately so we went pant-less for a week or more - obviously with a girl she can wear a dress/skirt so not completely naked but if your DS is happy to go without any bottoms on, I'd probably carry on for a while longer. When I did start re-introducing the pants, I did it in conjunction with light trousers so that DD was aware that she needed to take them off before weeing.

With mine, I went for loose trousers (well, shorts as it was summer) with no pants. He's doing well, it's only day three. What ever you do...dont' go back to pull ups or nappies at all! (apart form at night)

hello! my ds now 2.7 has just got dry during the day but i know exactly what you're talking about. i think some children are slow burners (not literally of course), break potty training down into tiny steps first naked, then pants, then pants and loose trousers and no buttons/zips, concentrate on just wees for now and dont fuss about the poos thats a big no no. my ds also likes to wash his hands and hates dirt in general so when he had a poo on the floor and my friend freaked out about it he thought he had done something wrong and woould not poo out of a nappy for 5 months. lots of praise. my ds didnt like the transition between naked and pants and thought basically if he was covered he could wee so we did it together. bit silly i know and you can only do it at home really but i got my underwear and showed him how to do it. any accidents just keep really light hearted about it and say its ok we'll get it in the potty next time. hope it helps x x

happy new year! thanks so much for your replies. we continued in the same vein and yesterday afternoon he took himself off to the potty, pulled down pants and away he went!!!
pretty much continued like that though doesn't like poos now in his nappy (which are on during lunchtime nap and nighttime) so wants to be changed immediately - i take that as a good sign and hope that he'll get round to doing those in potty some time soon.

thanks so much for your words of wisdom and replies - much appreciated.

when he has a poo in his nappy, plop it into the potty so he sees where it goes. helped with the transition. also is he in th ehigh chair for meal times? our ds has a little chair at a little table so he can get down for the potty when he needs to. when he was in the high chair i believed it just prolonged the 'training' (hate that term)
