Day 3 Slow/No start... Give up?

Hello!

Our DS is 2yr 7months and we decided to take advantage of us both being at home over the christmas and new year break to begin potty training him. He'd been nappy patting before that so we thought we had a good chance. It's day 3 now.

Day 1, 9 wee accidents. No potty
Day 2, 11 wee accidents. No potty
Day 3 so far, 11 wee accidents. He did wee in the potty first thing this morning, raising hopes but that's because we sat him there, not because he asked. He's reticent to sit on the potty at all now.

He's having small wees frequently so we're going through lots of pants! He dosen't seem to mind wee-ing and sitting wet so he's a bit sore in places too poor lad.

Does it sound like we started too early? I hope not. We tell him he'll get stickers and haribo. He got both this morning for the little potty wee that he did. Doesn't seem to be so much of an incentive though.

With such slow progress (or is it?) I don't know what to think. I didn't have rose tinted view of what it would be like from reading on here, but I was perhaps hoping for more than one hit out of three days

We're just letting him run around in pants at the moment. Sersiously considering training pants though now. I think they're not well regarded though due to mixed messages.

Thanks for reading and greatful for any input!

Cheers

G

what are you doing to train him?

he may simply not have the first clue what you want him to do with the potty.

potty traiing is actually learning several sets of things
not just blader control, but the language (wee-wee, use the potty), what the potty is for etc etc

Yes he says the words wee wee and poo, and he understood when we told him he has to sit on the potty to do his wee and poo.

really? i don't think you can assume that until he has actually done it. he may have an idea but not really be certain enough to dare to do it, after all prior to three days ago he'd have weed in a nappy every day of his life!

have you demonstrated wee-ing on the potty?

have you caught a few drips of wee in the potty and rewarded him for that?

is he being induced to sit on the potty at times he's likely to wee? (after naps and meals)

when you see signs he's going to wee (hoppng from foot to foot, fidgeting) is he sat on potty?

have you shown him 'once upon a potty' (TBH, this was just an inducement for mine to sit on the po whilst i played it on my laptop.)?

poty training can be really hard work, as i remember it taking up pretty much all my time until she was willing to we upon request.

i really think you're expecting way too much if you want him to recognise all by himself that he needs a wee, hold it in until sat on potty, and go, without having ever done a wee on the potty before and without being really really sure that's the right thing to do.

although kids somtimes pick things up just like that, othertimes they need lots of demonstration and reassurance. like riding a trike, or walking in shoes or any of the myriad things some toddlers are reluctant to do at first but get good at with plenty of practice...

and if its any comfort, on day 3, i'd just managed to get DD to sit on the potty without screaming. they fear the new, and potty was no exception.

oh and don't put him in pants until he's at least partly trained! currently he's just learning to treat them like another nappy.

no pants will also cure rashyness.

with the heating up it won't be too bad..if you have a room with a hard floor i recommend you limit yourself to there.
