DS1 is 2.10 and has been doing a wee in the potty at bathtime for ages. Tomorrow we are going to put him into pants and see what happens!

We are having Christmas at home (and no visitors til Boxing Day) so seems as good a time as any to try. If he is still having more than a few accidents by middle of next week then I'll put him back in nappies for another month or two.

Anyone else tackling it at the same time?

Oh can wee join in too? DS1 is 2.6 and have been gettig the pressure is he trained yet from the rellies so thought we would give it a bash starting on Monday as we are going to be home a fair bit next week.

Is a week a good amount of time to try figure if its a total disaster to try again Feb half term.

Will go back and read the thread now.

Have just been out to buy pull-ups! DS was getting so upset, trying to hold it in until he couldn't any more then having accidents on the floor and getting even more hysterical. He wasn't being defiant and doing it just to spite us (he does this lots with other things, but not with this!) - he was genuinely distressed about not wanting to go on the potty and even though we were (trying to be) v calm, patient and encouraging he was getting more and more stressed about it. So we have put him in the pull-ups and told him he can still go on the potty if he wants (have also bought a load of party-bag type little presents and put in a jar as incentive) but it's ok if he doesn't. Could not take it any more! All the best Meg and others!

Hi DD1 is 2.5; started Sat; had been letting her run around with naked bottom half in evenings for a while so used to going. Sat was good (2 accidents); Sunday 3 but we were at a party and less attentive! She is good at telling us but prob not so good at interrupting when we are chatting. Mon and Tues excellent no accidents all day and first poos in potty. V funny how she watches it come up (sorry TMI!) but I wish I was that flexible!

Today her father had her in the morning; too excited I think; v little reminding (i ask her every 15 mins or so from about 45 mins after last one), so 3 accidents! Was not impressed as she was rather upset about it but successful afternoon including 2 out and about.

Big day out tomorrow with GPs so be interested to see how that goes. Quite pleased so far and so much better than at 2 when she was really anxious although keen in theory!

We are contemplating a start this weekend. Marking thread in case I do indeed get the energy to give it a go

We've fallen at the first hurdle! DS got chest infection so not in the best mood to tackle. Tried it for one day before he got poorly but he refused to sit on the potty with a bare bottom. Happy on potty in pants, nappy or fully clothed, but not be convinced to sit and perform! I thought he understood idea, and liked the idea of stickers and choc buttons, but i think more preparation needed - potty at bath time etc for a bit. Will watch thread with interest!

All the best to potty dwellers and parents!

Day 4 completed here, and other than pooing in the bath (yuk!) no accidents! today we even managed a trip into town without problem. Tomorrow might be a different day, with all the excitement etc, but am hoping this is end of nappies!

K75 · 24/12/2009 21:28

Just completed day 6; hurrah; one accident free day and two including today with only one accident. Really impressed; we have managed a day out today and v little reminders although v funny sat in restaurant toilet with her recounting at top toddler volume "Mummy my poos coming it's really big and brown!!" Done trains and cars. Lets hope there is no regression. Definately vote for leaving it until they really get it!

We started on Boxing Day (DH at work so relatively quiet day here) and I would consider it sucessful - several wees and poos on potty and several accidents, but no great traumas!

Today he was a bit reluctant but managed two wees on potty, two in gym when went swimming - one in changing room and one in shower . No poos today!

I am going to continue for the rest of the week as it will be a while before I have this length of time off - and he is 3 in February and is ready for it.

I dont remember DD being this much trouble!

fruitpastille · 27/12/2009 22:52

Can I join in? DS is 2.9 so thought we'd better give it a go while DH off work for a couple of weeks (got DD 6 months too so didn't fancy doing it on my own). He showed zero signs of readiness (would sit in dirty nappy all day if allowed!) so was a bit apprehe0nsive but one week in I feel optimistice! First day we had lots of puddles but he gradually realised what was going on and we began to see signals (hopping around etc) so we could prompt him to try. He loves all the praise - phoning grandparents to tell them etc and the last couple of days we have had no accidents Eve went to a pub for lunch today and he used his potty in ladies with MIL. Now we might try prompting a bit less and give him more chances to request himself. He won't go anywhere near the toilet though - potty only for now. Also he is less sure about poos. We have caught a couple but he said he was doing a wee. Then tonight he did 2 in his nappy just after bedtime so not sure if he held on to them a bit? He did get out of bed though to look for us (although he didn't say his nappy was the reason) so at least he knew something was going on! Definitely will keep going now though. Good luck everyone else!

Have been considering doing DD, she'll be 2 in 2 weeks but often tells me she needs a wee and always before a poo. Likes to sit on the potty but won't do anything on it so not certain she's ready.

To StealthPolarBear, perhaps your DS doesn't yet know the feeling before he goes? When I did DS2 he kept wetting a little in his pants, we'd clear it up and then 10 mins later it would happen again... one afternoon a couple of days in, he woke from his nap with a clean nappy so I sat him on the potty in front of the TV with a biscuit and a drink It didn't take him long to go and once he understood the sensation of going he was fine - totally trained in a week! (night and day because the little bugger he refused to wear nappies at all from that point on - he was 2.3 - eek!)

To others whose children are not taking to it and you are having tantrums I would definitely recommend trying again in a couple of months, I did DS1 at 2.3 (to get it out of the way before DS2 arrived) and it was a nightmare, he was totally not ready for it but I persevered and I would say it took over a year for him to be properly trained ie going without prompting. They are all ready at different ages, you need to take your cues from them.

andirobobo · 28/12/2009 21:34

OK so he rebelled a bit today - refused (very politely!) not to go on potty! I put a pull-up on as it wasnt worth the hassle and then after he did a poo at lunchtime, he then asked to go back into underpants. So we did, and then he wet himself and didnt seem too bothered that his legs were wet!

I will keep trying as he knows what is going on, but dont want to make it into a battle of wills!

cheekymonkeymum · 31/12/2009 17:29

Hi there! We are on day 2 of potty training and going pretty well today. Ok, so a few mistakes but by the end of today he has been telling me he needs "wee wee" and running to the potty. Stickers seem to be working for us. Mind you, tomorrow it could all be different. DS is 2 and a half and we tried a few months ago. I did the Gina Ford method and I'm not sure whether it was too much for him being asked to sit on the potty too many times in the day and not being able to go out anywhere or whether this time he just seems more ready and aware, but things are much better. Also, tried sitting him on/asking him re potty less frequently and it has felt less pressured. Last time I gave up on day 3, having cleaned the sofa twice (and managed to dry it out) and found he seemed to be waging a campaign against the carpet! Would recommend bin bag covers on sofa with towel over seems to be working....so far!! Good luck everyone - you don't realise what hard slog it is until you try it do you?

andirobobo · 01/01/2010 21:27

Tell me about it! I have been using carpet shampoo like nobodies business!

He is still slow on the uptake - so not sure whether the time is right, but my childminder is keen for me to carry on. By the time he goes back it will have been 10 days so I reckon if she can manage for a few days with the wetness, or perhaps he will be better there as there are two others of a similar age who are already using the toilet!

He is interested one minute and not the next, so not sure!

SingleMum01 · 01/01/2010 21:38

Advice from one who's done it - I took 2 weeks off work/nursery over easter and basically stayed at home with DS. Less clothes to wear - easier to get off and less to wash.

Had loads of special toys at hand near potty to encourage staying on and doing something in it. Plus we stayed playing most times in the kitchen/diner - where the floor hadn't any carpet so was easier to use.

I reckon if they're ready for it you'll crack it in a couple of weeks. If not, try again a few months later. Only use pants, not pull ups. Although he still had the odd accident and I used to take a potty out with us and spare clothes for a good 6 mths.

Now nighttime training is another matter entireley.

Good luck everyone.

fruitpastille · 02/01/2010 21:40

Doing ok two weeks in! We are asking fairly often if he needs his potty but the answer is always 'no' so I don't know why we bother. He is now asking for it most of the time and we are getting poos as well as wees. Giving lavish praise is working well I think. We had one 'proper' accident yesterday and a few dribbles that made trousers damp but there was lots of excitement at in laws with his cousins. We are only using pull ups at night or for a guarenteed nap (e.g. long car journey in afternoon). The car seat protector has been worth the money but not used as much as I initially thought it would be so he's pretty good at holding on.

Hopefully we can try the big loo in a few weeks - currently he won't go near it. I know we sould probably keep the potty jut for the bathroom but our steep stairs area bit of a slog while carrying hefty 6 monther who doesn't like being left on her own!

SingleMum01 · 03/01/2010 20:39

Fruitpastille - I think you need to keep the potty wherever he is initially. I used to have one in the bathroom and carry one around the house with us! Took my DS a long time till he was happy to use the big loo so don't expect miracles. His bottom fit better on the potty at that time.
