How to tackle this 'pants' issue?

DS2 has just had his 3rd birthday, he is fine going on the toilet and never has an accident when he is naked but as soon as the pants go on he wees or poos in them, he just wont tell me when he needs to go.
I took him out and let him choose some Thomas Pants but he has had accidents in all of them, he is now saying he wants Peppa Pig pants but i have said he can have them when he can keep his Thomas pants clean and dry, i dont know if that was the right thing to say but im stumped as to what to do to tackle this. Any wise words?

Apparently boxers are better than pants, as pants hold him in tighter and they feel like a nappy - so I am told!!! I can't give you any more ideas as my ds is autisitc and will NOT contemplate any kind of potty training at the moment although we do keep trying!!

Sounds like a good idea to me.
We are trying all kinds of reward systems with our DS. (will be 3 in Jan)
If he has no "leaks" in his pants and makes it to the toilet in time he gets a penny for his money box.
Poo in the loo = sweeties (although thats tailed off now and he does it anyway)

We also use the "wee wee clock" (an egg timer) timed to go off every 15-20 minutes so he knows its time for a wee.

But, leaks are a problem. He can go through 6 or 7 pairs of pants in a day. It totally drives me mad. He won't go back in nappies, I've tried, he just tells me they are for babies. Have no idea what to do now. We've been doing this for about 3 months now, and I have to honestly say that the "leaks" are getting worse. I know boys can be lazy with potty training, but other than leave him in wet pants all day I am not sure what else to do to tackle it.

The pants request is a red herring, IMO, he just isn't willing and/or able to do what you are asking.

My 3yo does this too. He is definitely able - on a recent long car journey he asked three times to wee, not one drop in his pants - but he is not normally willing - he just isn't bothered. Boxers don't make any difference here.

I tell myself he'll get it eventually

Going comando seemed best option for our boy to start with, Pants equalled wet pants, shorts only equalled dry boy who could pull them down by him self and take him self to potty when he needed to.

I'd second going commando, worked for ds1 if we had a tricky week suddenly having a few more accidents we'd leave off the pants and just take him out in trousers, not sure why it worked but he did used to have cloth nappies and I sometimes wondered if having the cloth of pants on felt the same??
