Think I might need some support to get through a very long day!

Im really trying to keep my patience at bay, as I have an extremely stubborn 2.11yr old dd2!

I have bought chocolates as a treat for going but shes already had a tantrum as I wouldnt give her any unless she goes on the potty and actually does a we as apposed to just sitting there. (harsh aren't I, but this lovely girl gets given an inch and takes a mile)!!!!

Oh my worrrrrrd , I know you shouldn't compare, but dd1 was sooooo easy in comparison, 3 days and done , well on the dry front anyway. Poos were another story!

This is our 2nd attempt since Easter hols. That was a nightmare as she wouldn't go on the potty or toilet without a fight. Today there seems to be more promise as she was so excited this morning. She was so good on the school run for dd1 and even went on the potty herself to sit a few times before we left, but as yet no wee! Except one accident walking back home from the shops to buy her treat.

hmm may be I should give her a little choc for her efforts this morn?????

We've had no successes at all over the last few days, and it's been nearly a week since the last wee in the potty. I'm finding it hard to keep my patience sometimes. One thing that did make me laugh was when DD1 (aged 10!) followed by DD2 (aged 6) took it on themselves to do wees in the potty today, as an example for DD3. There are signs at least that DD3 knows where the wees/poos are supposed to go (she points to the potty when I ask her), so hopefully something will click soon. Otherwise I might be asking DDs 1&2 to do a few more 'examples' in the potty!

wow we arent having much luck between us are we

DS has been in nursery today and yesterday. I sent him in along with 6 pairs of pants and underpants, they were all wet through (having been weed in and rinsed) when i picked him up his nursery nurse/key worker told me he got to the potty once and almost a second time, but the others he just wet himself then went to tell someone he had wet himself. His keyworker told us this is perfectly normal and it can take weeks! She also said that it was reassuring that at least he is going straight to tell somene when he has wet rather than just continuing to play, so hopefully the penny will drop at some point (lets hope sooner rather than later!)

Can I add an encouraging & positive reply? Hurrah I think we've cracked PT at home! No accidents for a week when naked from the waist down either at home or at nana's!

Slightly negative is that as soon as I put pants on him he wees ha ha. Pull ups stop me getting mega-stressed when we are out and about but I fear that they are making the problem worse! He is quite good in them and if I put him on the potty he'll usually wee but he doesn't tend to seek the potty out or ask for a wee when we're out of the house.

He's at nursery today (in pullups) but i'm not holding out much hope for success - too much distraction! And he can't just go to the potty there, has to ask which he's not good at.

Ho hum, someone tell me it's going ok will you? I started this reply positive and now I've gone negative!!

Hi we started training ds (2.11) for the second time last thurs. So far, it has been going so much better than when we tried before. he was so resistant last time and even though he had some success I'm not sure he was really ready. So far he has been taking himself to the potty (without bottoms on) and has even said a few times when clothed. Otherwise we have to remind him. He has even managed poos on the potty which he never had before. We too felt a bit under pressure as the nursery kept on about it as he starts pre-school in Sep. he has had a few accidents but it's not constant so I'm not worried. I think the mistake I made last time was putting him in nappies when we went out and that's too confusing imo, he just got lazy. So we stayed in for a few days and been out on short trips so far and he even used a public loo after being coaxed. Tomorrow he's going to nursery in pants for the first time so we'll see how that goes

CherryandWhite · 29/07/2009 15:55

yey, some positive replies. i am picking ds up from nursery at 4.30pm i dont hold out much hope, am just preparing for another load of washing!

i totally agree with the nappies being too confusing. DS has a nappy on during his nap at nursery so i am doing the same at home. I am hoping to begin with that he will try to a have a poo at this time. As i have mentioned before he has had problems pooing in the past so we are ignoring that issue for the moment.

Alishanty, i hope your ds has more success in nursery than mine. Alhtough i do agree with Ziggy, there are so many distractions and the fact they have to ask creates more problems, poor things

Alishanty · 29/07/2009 16:50

I am fully prepared for all his clothes to be soaked tomorrow Cherry White as he is not very good at asking and says no if asked, also they don't have the time to watch each child so closely but at the end of the day it was their idea so they are going to have to put up with it lol and hopefully he will get the idea soon.

CherryandWhite · 29/07/2009 18:44

DS had a good day today - well kind of i think
yesterday he went through 5 or 6 sets of pants and underpants, today just 1!! He tried to hold in a poo but wet himself at the same time so had to be changed. That was the only mess :-) however, the negative point is that he didnt go on the potty/toilet all day at nursery. So although he didnt wet himself he held it in until he had his nappy on at nap time! he then held it in until we got home, i could see he needed a wee because he was 'holding' himself. I put him on his potty and he had a wee. He now has nappy back on with his pjs ready for bed.

The lady at nursery said although in the long run he shouldnt be holding it in, it is a good sign for the moment that he has good bladder control.

Well, we seemed to have a bit of a breakthrough yesterday. After another mediocre day when I managed to just about catch a poo and the end of a wee in the potty, I went shopping last night and thought I'd come back to DH telling me that he'd had to clean up more puddles on the carpet. DH had taken the potty upstairs and put it in the bathroom, and I got back to DH telling me that DD had done a poo in it, without being told all by herself! Amazement and praise all round! DH found it funny that it's me that's having to deal with the reminding about using the potty and the puddles etc while he's at work, and the minute my back is turned, she uses the potty when I'm not there!
But this morning it's back to the same old thing and we've had an accident. Still, we'll keep going.

oh no bb thats a shame. i say keep going! i was soooo close to giving up, i hated the first 3 days and was close to tears with frustration (im a wuss, this i know!) however, ds is improving. We spent 3 days at home which were very messy, but from the advice of lovely people on here i kept going. He has been in nursery for 3 days, first day 6 changes of clothes, second day only one change and today no accidents today at all. Tomorrow will be the real test, he is with me again and wont have the routine of nursery and the other children as role models so to speak.

I am going to keep him home in the morning and try to get into the potty thing, then taking him out to soft play in the afternoon! Do i take the potty???

Anyway that was a avery long winded (and stlightly side tracked) way of saying...keep going. i would get rid of the pull ups, i agree that they do know that they arent 'real' underpants and so they dont have the samem effect as underpants! Give it a while longer. (again i am aware that this is easier said than done!)

tatty33 · 31/07/2009 14:43

Is there room for one more? Have started ds this week, and have wavered with stopping but have managed to continue.

he's doing really well - but still its me asking him to go, and have been staying in a lot, really can't imagine how we'll re-enter real life of whole mornings in parks and playgroups

any other updates?

Ladyem · 03/08/2009 11:01

Hi! We've started the potty training DD at the end of last week and so far so good. Wees are no problem and last night she did her first poo in the potty, but it scared the life out of her!! She did do another one today, though, so not too bad!!

What I'm wondering is, now she's getting good at asking to use the potty at home, what do I do when we go out, like to the shops? Do I put her in a pull up, or keep her in pants and then take the potty with us and lots of changes of clothes? I'd be mortified if she did a huge wee in the middle of Asda!

babybarrister we had the same with DD a few weeks ago, she just wasn't interested and would never tell us when she wanted to go, so I just left it a couple of weeks and last week we let her run in the garden with no nappy on and put the potty out there. She just came and told us she'd used it!! So I think that something just clicks with them when they are ready. He will get it when he is ready. I'd just offer it to him when you change him and don't make a big deal of it. If he uses it, great, if not, no problem. He will do it!!

Alishanty · 04/08/2009 20:26

We have had some progress (I think!). Predictably he wet himself at nursery but it was his first time in pants. On the way home he said he needed a wee so I took him to the side and pulled his clothes down but unfortunately he couldn't hold on and soaked himself but at least he said! He has been loads better at home, still a couple of accidents but not as many, and this morning he ran down the garden and pood his pants but did tell me. He has managed poos on the potty at home when he has been bare bummed. After reminding him constantly to say when he needs a wee when clothed, he told me earlier and we managed to get to the potty before wetting. Think it takes them a while to learn how to hold it and sometimes his pants are a little bit damp, maybe that's because he leaves it right til the last minute. We have been managing trips out without too many disasters, he seems to be holding it for longer aswell now. I'm pleased with his progress so far, he has got further in a couple of weeks, than he did in months when we tried before, it has surprised me. Oh and now I've been giving him a treat if he stays dry for a while and he also says he's going to use the potty at nursery. He's going to nanny's tomorrow afternoon so is taking his potty and we'll see how he gets on there.
