Started potty training ds1 in October with the help of pre-school and quite frankly it has been a nightmare.

He has been dry at pre-school since Christmas and when we are out he's usually pretty good and will tell us if he needs to go or will at least go if we prompt him, but at home it's another story. He knows when he needs to go, he just won't. Even if we prompt him when he obviously needs to go, he refuses to and insists he doesn't need to even though he's clutching his willy and squirming round with his legs crossed. He holds on until he can't any longer, then just wees wherever he is.

I've tried rewards when he's successful/nothing when he not approach, tried doing lots of praise on success/total non-reaction to accidents, made it into a game which worked for a while, got cross with him, (i know, i know ). I threatened to put him back in nappies but he wouldn't be bothered as he is going through a phase of pretending to be a baby (to be like 14 month old ds2).We are just about to start a smiley face for success/sad face for an accident chart and if he gets more smiley than sad faces at the end of the week he gets a toy he's wanted for a while.

I am sick of cleaning up wee and poo and having to vax the lounge carpet because the house is starting to smell like a gents loo He has just wee'd all over my leg, it was the final straw and i lost my rag and sat him on the naughty step, which i know was the wrong thing to do but I don't know what else to do.

Help!

how does he get on with it at pre school?

is he dry there?

i think a star chart is good

do you use a potty or a toilet? I nevr used a potty - and kept a store of books in the loo for amusement

has he seen you/your DH use the toilet???

this is of HUGE interest and can make them feel grown up if they use the loo, like mummy

At pre-school he just goes when he needs to, he's been dry for a while there.

He uses the toilet, we started him on the potty but he's been off that for ages. He is quite happy to sit on the loo once he's there, he even messes around pretending to fall in it so no fears there.

He sees us use it all the time.

We're off out to get his stickers now so will check back later

hmm - if he is dry at pre-school then he can do it

v frustrating - i think a sticker chart is great

That's the thing Ruby. He can, he just won't.

He's really excited about the smiley stickers though and talked about it all the way home. I think he's more excited about the stickers than the toy.

Fingers crossed it'll work.
