Potty training a 21m old

Hi all, I am looking for some guidance for potty training our 21m old boy.

We started introducing the potty a few weeks ago which he hated (still does at nursery). He has only occasionally told us he has done a poo but never a wee. He has always been happy to sit in his own filth, a little to happy!

When we put him on the potty we will sit there for up to 10 mins with no wee sometimes but then as soon as that nappy goes on, he fills it with wee. We started putting on pullups but we are going through them like no tomorrow! Just this morning for example, he woke for the day and proceeded to fill 4 pull ups in 1.5 hours. This time was with 2 wee's on the potty inbeween nappies. He takes laxido in the morning so does guzzle a bottle.

I'm torn to whether to go back to nappies rather than pull ups because of the speed we are going through them. He doesnt trying pulling them up or down yet and to clarify, still doesn't say if he needs a wee/poo etc.

Any tips or past experiances shared would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Sounds like he's not ready.

It doesn’t sound as though he’s ready yet. I’d have a couple of weeks at least back in nappies before trying again. It will give you both a chance to relax Smile

He’s not even 2?
That’s very early especially for a boy.
Ive got 6 dc and have left it closer to 3 except with one who basically told me at 2 no more nappies and basically did it herself.
I found it so much easier and they all got it really quickly too.

It sounds a bit on the early side. If you're going to do it at that age then i think you have to do it the commando way. Have you read the Oh Crap method? Basically they have nothing on their bottom half and you watch them like a hawk. They normall try to hold it and when they get wriggly or fidget you pop them on the potty. Give it 30s or so (but don't fight it) and see if a wee happens. Praise if it does, don't worry if ot doesnt but be ready to grab them again soon! If they are ready ypu usually get progress in 3 days. No progress at all in that time? Then they weren't ready. Try again in 6 weeks.

My girls both potty trained just fine at similar ages. But my boys didnt show any awareness and would sit in a puddle of wee and look surprised it was there when they got up. They weren't ready till 3. Pull ups really confuse the issue with v young ones - it feels the same to them as nappies, so they let it go just the same.

I'd be tempted to persist as it's summer and he has used the potty. No pants so he either has to use the potty/loo or wee down his legs and experience being wet. Have you tried a loo seat? My DD had no interest in the potty but was very happy with a loo seat, I think because I had made a point of going for a wee with her in the bathroom and she liked a little chat or for us to sing.
