When do stop using rewards when potty training?

We’ve been doing potty training for about 2 weeks and the first week we used a sticker every time which they loved. At the end of last week lo just started telling me when they needed a wee and would just get on the toilet/ potty and do it. I keep saying yay let’s get a sticker but they don’t see that fussed as they’re just getting on with it and then I forget.

Shall I not bother now or keep them as a reward for poos? They didn’t poo for 3 days this weekend but did it in a nappy before bed. The first week was good with poos but not much luck last week.

Reintroduce the rewards.

Rewards didn’t really work with my son. He would literally just scream to get a sticker/choc button etc even thought he wasn’t using to potty and had accidents constantly. I just stopped and waited a few months. It ur little one isn’t bothered about getting the reward id just stop. When my sin finally got the hang of it I didn’t use any rewards other than praise

Rewards work well for some and not too well.for others.

I'd go with a 'don't offer/ wait til asked' approach as time goes on.

The pooping is a separate issue. If pooping seems to be hit or.miss, pay attention to diet - fibre and lots of clear fluids can keep a toddler pooping regularly. Constipation can be a massive setback, causing discomfort that can result in withholding, and the whole thing snowballs. A reward for 'trying' can be helpful, especially if the toddler has been tooting or if he normally poops around a certain time every day.

Rewards worked great for DS1, one chocolate button for a wee, two for a poo (don't judge, it was the 90s Grin)

I realised rewards weren't going to work for DS2 when, on offering a chocolate button for a successful wee on the potty, he stamped his little foot and announced 'want packet!'

Not helpful, I know, but it's a cute story. OP, just do whatever you need to do. If they're getting the hang of it praise is just fine.

Thank you. I agree popping is a separate issue because in nappies they could do up to 3 a day! But now with potty training I’ve noticed how much it’s slowed down. A reward for trying seems like a good idea too, thanks @mathanxiety

I love that story @DramaAlpaca thats exactly something I imagine my lo doing too but they have allergies so no chocolate buttons! I thought of using these fruity fish packets but I know they would just demolish the whole packet per potty trip!

Thanks all, I’ll use stickers for trying and poos definitely and stick to praise for wees unless they ask for a sticker.
