6 month old using potty

I just wanted to type this somewhere because even if it helps just one person then my mission is complete. I am on my
second baby (I had 2 under 2…) and it is the second time I have introduced the potty when I can clearly see they are straining to do a poo and can sit up by themselves- so with the second child it is at 6 months old. I am now a few weeks into them doing a poo and wee each time they are sitting on the potty. I understand this is elimination or has been around for years, but it really works. It is convenient for me as I currently have potties everywhere for my 2 year old , but my point being, she is now 100% dry during the day and uses training pad at night. I don’t really have a point here, other than if you have the time, head space, energy and utilities to try and Introduce a potty early then go for it ! In my experience , it has helped us immensely in the ‘long’ term.

But how would this work when out and about?

How do you whip clothes off so rapidly (maybe your kids take time pooing, but mine don't!)?

Do you actually leave nappy off at 6 months old and risk your carpets and sofas?

I'm intrigued

@HattiesBag oh not doing out and about…just when we’re at home with the luxury of time, to be able to sit on the potty if there’s signs of needing a poo. Also, not leaving the nappy off. Putting it on again…I’m not expecting to actually potty train them yet, just merely that it’s been a useful ‘skill’ to learn.

I agree Op. DD2 has constipation and ERIC suggested the potty at 7m which I was like, lol but let’s give it a go. She’s taken to it really well and it’s such a better position for moving her bowels.

Spoodles · 23/01/2026 18:17

You don't you put a nappy on your 6 month old at night? I'm going to be honest it sounds like a lot of unnecessary work when they are not actually learning a skill. Your baby doesn't know when she needs the toilet she needs to go to the potty she's just peeing when her nappy is taken off like many babies her age.

My dd does this with her baby who is coming up to 1 and did with elder daughter

HattiesBag · 23/01/2026 18:31

@perooAh got it. I think it's a cool concept and if it saves on nappies, I love it more

peroo · 23/01/2026 19:21

@Spoodles no, we absolutely put a nappy during the nighttime. This was purely a post about how occasionally, when / if you can, why not put your baby on the potty (during the day) if it takes your fancy? It’s been good for my two! @Btowngirl yes! This is exactly why we started in the first place and it cured her constipation …but you definitely need to have a lot of time available as it took her a while to sit and wait for it!

Did this too with my little one (now 15 years) and yes it really works. My granny who was a nurse had suggested to get him used to going on a potty from young age. We got in habit of reading a book on potty after every bath and he just got used to going. Before he could talk he used to give me a wave (seriously) if he wanted the potty. Nappies still went on when needed.
well done for speaking out to let others know. If it saves on nappies and potentially more comfortable for baby, what’s not to love! X

@Hbradley ah what a lovely response! Appreciate it. I love hearing all these stories. Yes totally believe the wave, that’s brilliant. And yes I believe they absolutely find it more comfortable/easier to push on the potty..
