Night time potty training

Hi all I’m sure this has been asked many times but I’m new here.
my 2.5 year old has just started potty training and it’s gone really well. We put a nappy on at nap time (2 hours) and it’s normally dry but when I change her in the morning it’s very wet.
She wears regular nappies at night but everyone keeps talking about pull ups. Should I switch to pull ups or does it not matter? Just wondering if there’s an advantage to switching?
Thanks for any advice

Pull up nappies

At two it doesn't matter what you use. If she still needs something overnight when she's older, and wants to put her own pj's on for independence, then swap over when she's 3/4.

So normal nappies are absolutely fine?

Absolutely fine, I'd only change if DD starts complaining or becomes uncooperative at nappy change

Night time dryness usually comes a while after daytime potty training so go with whatever works. We potty trained in the day at just past 2 but she wasn’t dry at night until just after 3. It’s when their body wakes them if they need a wee so nappies at night are fine and often better for big night time wees.

Great so normal nappies are fine at night, I don’t need to change anything? Thanks guys I was starting to think I needed to swap over. I need to believe in myself more and know if it ain’t broke don’t fix it! But you just hear so many opinions and it makes you doubt yourself. Thanks all x

I would stay on nappies for the minute, give it a few more months, then switch to pull ups. I am glad the potty training is going well.

Pull ups and nappies are exactly the same. The only difference is one has tabs and the other doesn't. So just use whatever is easiest for you. Often once they are getting themselves dressed and ready for bed then pull-ups can be useful for them to put on independently.

mumof1or2 · 11/12/2025 18:21

I use night time pull ups purely because they absorb more wee than normal nappies and my son leaks if he wees during the night in a normal one now. If the normal ones aren’t leaking then there’s no reason to change. My son is the same age, he’s been training for about 6 months now and in the last month or so he’s woken up with a dry nappy most mornings and done a massive wee on the potty straight away. So I think that just comes with time, probably not much you can do to make them hold it while they’re asleep!

Dry overnight is hormonal, you don’t train it, we used a pull-up nappy until it was dry for a prolonged period. No one wants to deal with a wet bed in the middle of the night.

@Sarah1standlastbaby hi im at the same stage but ou GS has Autism and ADHD ive tried everything and I know if I dont wear a nappy ill have a wet bed his other gran says he doesn't wear 1 when hes there at night were in a battle at the moment for custody so shes been telling loads of lies anyway I dont know where to to go next

NeatHare · 12/12/2025 17:05

Mariocatgran · 19/12/2025 07:32

Hi All
I spoke to nursery about this and apparently they have to have a certain level of a hormone before they wake to the need to use the toilet. Apparently even up to the age of 7 nobody would be concerned! That’s through the night only though
