3 year old wanting nappies again

Hi! My DS has been potty trained for about 6 months now, but recently he's been wanting to wear nappies all day again. He was just getting the hang of wearing bottoms and pulling them down to use the potty too, so I'm really sad that we've taken a huge step back.

He decided to potty train himself, so it wasn't a case of we started too soon. Just one day decided no more nappies during the day and started using the potty.

He starts preschool next Monday, so I'm really worried about how he's going to handle that.

He's not dry at night completely yet, so he wears a nappy to bed which is the only reason why we still have him in the house.

Would it be a bad idea to stop the nappies completely?

I would emphasise he’s a big boy now so nappies are only for nighttime. If he has a special Teddy or similar that he only has at night you could try and draw parallels. Have there been changes recently, he been ill or wetting himself?

I don’t think there’s any issue about not being dry at night yet. This is hormonal and will come in time (some take years).

Don’t put your child back in nappies! Children want all sorts of things that are not the best thing for them, they are irrational.
Be firm that nappies are not for day time, only sleeping. The end. Unless there is some kind of physical illness that means that this is necessary as a last resort.

Pull ups for bed only.

No nappies before bedtime as a non negotiable

My dd 3 would eat icecream for every meal and pawpatrol would be on 247 if I let her.
She also asks for milk in a bottle like her baby sibling - to which i say no because ots terrible for her teeth.

Your child doesnt know what's best.
You are the parent. Its your job to teach and guide him.

Thank you! I was firm and said no nappy, he had a tantrum but got over it. Was a lot easier than I was expecting. He can get quite nasty during tantrums with biting and hitting, so I'm always trying to avoid setting him off

Could you try the carrot approach. If he continues being a big boy without complaint you will buy him some very special pretty pants? I would emphasise that nappies are for babies during the day. When he gets to nursery and sees that the other kids wear pants he will be fine.

oh OP please tell me you haven’t put your potty trained 3 year old back in nappies simply because he asked you to?

you need to say ‘I’m so sorry, mummy put you back in nappies when you asked and that was a mistake. You’re wear underpants in the day time because you’re a big boy. Nappies are for sleep time. Bye bye nappy, see you at bedtime’ and then take it off and never put it back on during the day again.

Don't worry I didn't! He has had a few accidents in underwear and that normally triggers the want for a nappy but I've been firm on that they're only for bed time.
