4 year old wetting bed for first time

Hi,

sorry just wanted to ask and I’m prepared for all the ‘I’m being ridiculous’ posts but just wanting some advice, my DD will be 4 at the end of this month she potty trained so well she took to it so good, she even stopped the pull ups herself and said she wanted to wear knickers to bed (this was about a year ago now) so she’s been brill since then, the odd accident in the day here and there but never once had she wet the bed in the night always woke up dry or woke up to go for a pee but she came into mine and my husbands room and said she had wet herself, we obviously cleaned her up and the bed and she went back to sleep but I’ve just been thinking that is it just unusual for her to start wetting the bed now after a year of not at all not even once at the age of 4? I will have a chat with the health visitor as well tomorrow but first time parent (even if she’s 4 now haha) and only have one child. Thanks.

this happened with my eldest DD one night when we were away on holidays and another time after a busy day. She was obviously in a very deep sleep and exhausted. Never happened again and it didn’t become an issue.

It’s completely normal to happen the odd time but if it becomes regular you should go to the GP as it can be a sign of constipation

FancyCatSlave · 10/08/2025 19:16

It’s the first sign of illness in my DD, 5.
Usually before she comes down with a chest infection or similar she will have a night time accident. I’d be on the lookout for illness.

Totally normal. Mine were all dry at night at 2/3 but still had a handful of random wet beds until 7ish. Usually if they were coming down with something, change of routine etc.

Or threadworms. Have you had a look OP? Does she go to nursery?

If it’s just happened the once I wouldn’t think anything of it because it’s totally normal. She could be more tired than unusual and/or drank more than usual before bed due to the hot weather. Maybe also coming down with a bug.

Thank you so much everyone and for the advice! She did tell me her bum was itching this morning and I did have a Quick Look but couldn’t see any worms (unless they can’t be seen and I need to make a drs appointment) yeah she goes to nursery twice a week over the school holidays!
yeah she did drink and unusual amount before bed last night so that definitely could play a factor! Just worried as she’s been potty trained well over a year and this is the first night time accident, thank you everyone!

DS was dry very early (same time night as day, more or less) but would have random
occasional accidents.

It was nearly always after going to a friend’s house or birthday party.

We discovered that the cause was fruit squash.

It’s the artificial sweeteners in the “no added sugar” ones that irritates the bladder.
