DS is 4 in September and he’s been “potty trained” for a year now. I use the term loosely as we are still having fairly frequent accidents. He’s fine to go if prompted and uses either the toilet or potty with no issues but he doesn’t often remember to go on his own accord and is mostly prompted by getting a wet spot in his pants which is too late and makes him need a toilet immediately. It’s manageable for me as I just remind him to use the toilet and he will but I wish he was able to use his own initiative. Has anyone else had this and did it just get better over time? Would welcome any advice as I’ve also been potty training my 2.5 year old DD who has got it straight away and also dry at night and I can’t help but compare.

I'd do a week of boot camp, give him loads to drink (blackcurrant squash!) so he gets loads of practice at recognising a full bladder. Don't prompt and get him to clear up any accidents himself.

Ours got better over time. It took about 18 months before the "spot" accidents completely stopped. We prompt him but he just wasn't getting the signals until the last minute for ages. It's developmental.
