Potty training choice

Hi Mums,

I’m a first‑time mum to a little boy who has just turned two, and I’m looking to start potty training soon.

I’m a bit torn on whether to go for:

A toilet seat insert with steps, or

A standard potty.

I’ve seen mixed reviews online. I know there are pros and cons to both – the insert with steps seems handy because there’s no extra “transition” later on, but a potty seems easier for little ones to access..

What did you find easier? Which option worked best for you?

Thanks in advance!

It doesn’t have to be either/or. We used both, potty to begin with (and a travel one in the car which was a lifesaver!), and the steps/for the main toilet. Look at your local selling groups for the latter, someone is always getting rid of one!

Get both. I think the potty is good for initial training when you might catch them midstream or they need to go NOW and might not be able to make it to the bathroom. But I’d also be introducing the toilet with a seat/steps alongside e.g. to try for a wee before bath time and that’ll hopefully mean an easy transition to using the toilet most of the time. However, even once they’ve got it there’s still times where you might want the potty because toilets aren’t readily available so you stick it under the pram or in the boot of the car.
