Potty Training my nearly 3 year old is driving me crazy… advice needed

Hello.

My little on will be 3 in October.

we tried potty training on March but she just got very distressed when having accidents and would go near her potty except for doing one wee successful on it, so we parked the potty training until now.

So we’ve been going for over a week. She still wear a nappy at night but as soon as she wakes in the morning I take it off and let her run around with no nappy on/knickers on.
She’s very happy to run around and play with no knickers/nappy on and when we go out she asks for “big girl knickers on” and not a nappy any more.
She’ll have accidents when we go out and say “My wee is going to fall out” but sometimes she’ll hold her wee for the whole time we are out even with me or her dad asking “Do you need a wee”, “tell us if you need a wee”, “Do you need the potty”

She absolutely refuses to sit on the toilet or the potty, I even let her pick her own potty. I asked her to teach mummy how to sit on it and she did show me the once and told me it’s for wees and poos.

Weve bribe her with toys, sticker charts, days etc but everytime we ask her to use the potty or even just to practice sitting on it she just stamps her feet’s, picks it up and moves it away.

im at a loss.. I really want to perseve but its frustrating

any advice is welcome

Well firstly she's not nearly three. She's very much two. Does she sit on the potty or toilet at all? Or just have continuous accidents?

For my three DC I stayed in for a week and they got the hang of the potty indoors and then introduced going out with pants on.

She has sat on it to show me what you do on a potty (Wees and Poos) but when she needs a wee she won’t sit on it. When thinking about going on the toilet she says she will fall down it.

I’ve tried to get her to sit on the toilet with me just to practice but she won’t.

When having a poo she waits until her nappy is on for going to bed and goes away to the next to room to do it

We got her the My carry potty which she like to take with her as a “suitcase” but won’t use it

Have you got her a smaller seat that goes on the toilet? Something like this https://amzn.eu/d/aT7gL0W (this is just a random link) my 7 year old hated the potty but was great with these and my potty training two year old likes to be able to choose (she’s mostly got wees but poos are a challenge) equally she may not be ready. If she’s three in October, she’s not nearly three and waiting another month and trying again might work

Yeah you definitely need a toilet seat if you don't have one already. And make sure it's stable before lifting her up as they can wobble when you put them on which is unnerving. Is her potty comfortable? Some of the small ones aren't really. I've got one with a high back and removable middle from Amazon which seems to be a good fit.

Mine all hated the potty and wanted to use the toilet immediately. I got a little froggy seat for it on Amazon. It's a bit of a pain taking it on and off all the time but it did the trick! We only needed it for a few weeks until their confidence grew. I also got a 'no more nappies' book which they loved looking at.

Yes- I’ve got one of those also.

she doesn’t want to wear her nappies during the day anymore and instead asks for her big girl knickers which makes me think she’s ready. She also recognises when she needs to wee and when she did wear nappies she knew when she was doing a wee abd sometimes asked for her nappy to be changed

Edited

Thank you- I’ve just ordered another toilet seat for her… maybe the one we’ve got is t inviting enough??

she does come to toilet with me all the time and tells me I need to put her seat on when I go so she knows what it’s for

That you. I ordered a better one that’s pink and hopefully more inviting.

she hates having praise if she does a good job as well so it’s hard to get excited even if she does do a wee in the toilet because she just hates the attention

Keep going. She's the perfect age for it and it sounds like she's very ready but just a bit nervous of it all. I'm not normally one for bribery, but chocolate buttons worked like a charm with my son at a similar age. If she doesn't like the praise, just keep it all low key and matter of fact.

luckyluckyluck3 · 27/06/2025 22:34

For my first, I was guilted into it by my Mum. It took ages and was a nightmare. When I recounted this to my SiL, she looked confused and said, ‘So i
just took the nappy off when i had a day when we hadn’t got much on - if they had an accident quite quickly, I put it back on then tried again 2/3 weeks later. Eventually it was fine’ I took that advice with #2 and it was really very straightforward!
