2 year old won't use potty

DS turned 2 in February, his understanding is quite good (he says "mummy do wee, mummy toilet" when I use the toilet) but every time I sit him on the potty or toilet he says "all done" instantly and gets straight back up. He seems happy about it, and will go back on a few times with encouragement but stands up within 1-2 seconds each time then gets frustrated and won't go on again after a few times trying.

I try to get him to sit on each time I go, and before the bath to familiarise him with it, but he's still not done a wee on it. Or even sat on it long enough to really.
Does anyone have any advice?

Honestly I’d just leave it for a while, when he’s ready to do it he will. But I’d leave the potty out for him to sit on still.

He’s not ready, just leave him, is there any reason you feel you need to do it now?

My take is that too many people say kids "aren't ready". We don't say that about loads of other things we teach them to do!

We are 1 week into cold turkey no-nappy potty training our almost 2 year old, who was similar. The gently gently approach of trying on the potty sometimes wasn't working at all - never got one and at times he was upset to even sit on it.

Dya 1 potty training was tough - he held it in a lot. When he finally started going we stuck the potty under him. Day 2 he was clueless but not holding it in so much. Day 3 we had an amazing day - he told us once or twice that he needed it and then we prompted for a try or noticed the others were coming (watching like a hawk for signs).

Since then, it's been up and down because he's back at nursery with underwear on which apparently feels like nappies, but he's really making progress.

Because we knew he wasn't already on his way, we set aside 5 days at home to practice which really helped. My understanding is that waiting til they are older will speed things up (up to say 3 or so and then it might get slower as they have the habit more ingrained).

Hope that helps.

This sounds really typical to me. We didn't get my daughter to do more than odd wees in a potty until we took the nappies away. And there were many accidents then, for a few days, while she made the connections around what was going on. Knowing that toilet or potty means wee, and linking that to the feeling of a full bladder, and the muscle control to let the stream out while on a potty are all different steps they have to suss out.

Keep doing what you're doing (it's good potty learning) and start practising other skills like washing hands and wiping too. But worry about actual weeing and pooing in the potty down the line.

The ERIC website is really helpful. https://eric.org.uk/potty-training/

We took the nappies away and went into knickers when she was regularly dry in the morning and after naps, couple wash and dry her hands, was happy to sit on a toilet and could wipe herself with minimal help, and was consistently going to a preferred spot to poo. She's sadly stopped telling us to change her nappy as being at nursery with their busy staff had gotten her used to bring in a soiled one. My increasing annoyance at collecting on at least 1/3rd of days to have her handed over in a nappy full of dried on poo was what finally tipped me into trying to give her more independence around toileting!

He’s 2

i waited until my dc were older. Dd was 3, it was the beginning of summer and she had it cracked in 3 days. Never had an accident after that.

We tried the same method with ds but he took longer. We had to give up and postpone a few more months because it’s clear he wasn’t ready. He managed to be semi dry at nearly 4.

I disagree with not ready.
He doesn’t know what he supposed to do he needs the nappy taking off so he can most likely wee on the floor then you pick him up and put him on the potty for it and let him know that’s where wees go.
I have a nearly two year old who is potty trained because we did this regularly from 15 months for an hour or so at a time, then when I took the nappies away she knew what to do and also the sensation of needing a wee.
Basically he hasn’t needed to pay attention to the sensation of weeing and needing a wee until now- he will get it once he has to start thinking about it.
