Potty training regression after starting nursery?

Hi there

My toddler (3 years 3 months) last week started afternoons at nursery school, 4 days a week.

For some context, on one of those days he goes to my mums before and after nursery and the other 3 days he is in wrap around care from 08:45am to 5:15pm. On the fifth day he spends the whole day with my mother in law.

When he is at home he uses the toilet just fine but every day he’s been at the new school he has had accidents, both poos and wees.

Has anybody else experienced this when their child started nursery/school? If so, how long did it last and was there anything you did to help it improve?

Thank you in advance xx

It’s really common for this to happen. It’s a new setting, with new routines, new people, new toys etc. He might not know yet how long it’s going to take him to get from outside to the toilet, he might be absorbed with new activities, he might be a bit anxious about using new toilets etc.

Just ask the nursery staff to remind him more often.

DC had this. They would be dry completely at home. Be in nursery 2 days and have a ton of accidents. Nursery asked if DC was actually potty trained 🙄. When I explained to them, they said it could be that DC is so distracted by the activity, toy etc they just don't realise. They started reminding more often/directly asking and it soon eased and stopped.

Totally the same situation here. He did amazingly at first and was accident free at home for days. Loads of accidents since going back to nursery and that’s now translating to home too. He was previously telling me when he needed a wee but now keeps dribbling in his pants before he says anything, which hasn’t happened since Day 2 (it’s been a month since starting now). He doesn’t seem bothered by it either, whereas when first training he was more alarmed by the wee and would run to the potty by himself. So frustrating and I don’t know what to do about it so I’ll be watching this post with interest.

@GreenSkyes thanks for your response, glad it has got better!
@Lioness543 it’s so frustrating isn’t it! Have you had any improvements? X
